Using Advanced Searches

Use the text search function to enter keywords to help you locate the exact jobs that meet your criteria.

  1. Click Search Jobs to perform an Advanced job search.

  2. Enter your Keywords separated by spaces.

  3. Select a Search using option to filter your search.

  4. Click Search.

no quotation marks

Entering a phrase without quotation marks searches for the phrase and variations of that phrase. For exact phrases, use "quotation marks".

cobol programmer returns job postings with those words appearing together as a phrase or versions of those words together. For example, it may also find "cobol programming", "cobol", "programmer", or "cobol programmers".

You must use "quotation marks" around your search phrase to locates the exact phrase.

"cobol programmer" displays job postings with both words appearing together as a phrase.

stemming

Locates any word that starts with the same search terms you enter.

If you type program, search locates program, programs, programmers, programming, and such.

case-sensitivity

Search terms with mixed case will be case-sensitive. If you use all lowercase letters or ALL UPPERCASE, the search will match your terms in any case.

cobol programmer locates COBOL programmer or Cobol Programmer, or cobol programmer.

COBOL PROGRAMMER finds COBOL programmer or Cobol Programmer or cobol programmer.

Cobol Programmer only finds Cobol Programmer.

comma (,),
plus (+),
minus (-)

Do not use these characters in a Boolean search.

AND

Locates multiple words or phrases. Do not include parenthesis.

cobol AND java locates both of those words anywhere in the job description. This operator is not case-sensitive.

OR

Locates either one word or the other. Do not include parenthesis.

cobol OR java locates either word separately and both words in some instances. This operator is not case-sensitive.

AND NOT

Locates the first word on a page that does not include the second word. Do not include parenthesis.

cobol AND NOT java locates only job descriptions with the word cobol but without the word java. This operator is not case-sensitive.

( )

Group words or phrases. Other search terms can be included inside parentheses.

(cobol AND java ) AND NOT programmer locates a page with the words cobol and java, but not programmer.

Muti-word and phrase searching

Locates job descriptions that meet specific criteria.

("cobol programmer" OR "cobol developer") AND (designer OR "web developer") locates cobol programmer or cobol developer in any job description that also has the words designer or web developer.

 

Use the Boolean search option when using stop words. Stop words include: "the", "and", and "job" and other words that appear in most documents. Stop words are automatically removed from your query, which may affect returned results if you do not select Boolean.
