Sr. Linux Performance Engineer / Architect

Have the opportunity to work as a Linux Performance Engineer for a Global Fortune 50 firm located in New York City working within a greenfield Performance Management department that is responsible for Performance Architecture/Engineering and Capacity of all applications at the firm with a goal to automate and provide a “state of the art” virtual could computing service desk environment that works as a PaaS (Platform as a Service) and Performance/Capacity CoE. As a Senior Performance Engineer you will be working in a lab environment focusing heavily on Linux Performance Engineering working to implement builds and projects.  As part of this team you will handle client simulation, capacity planning, performance architecture & engineering, performance throughput for new applications, application rightsizing, load testing, etc.  The goal of this team is to provide the highest quality of service to their internal and external customers offering a dedicated full time service (e.g. for apps that need a permanent rig on call all the time), an ad-hoc service (stand up a formal test, perform it and then break it down logically and how it can be automated), and a consulting service (bring automated tools and expertise to the customer’s application, rather than the client bringing this expertise to us).  The vision is to provide a “one stop shopping” services for performance architecture/engineering and capacity, with skills listed, and price catalogs.  Executive Management thinks that several client applications would be on board with such service if done at the highest quality.  This group is rapidly growing and this client needs to think about scalability of platform, expandability of the team and straight-through charge-back models for clients.

Will responsible for the Linux Performance Engineering with a solid knowledge of enterprise-level infrastructure components and will be responsible for lab engineering and management functions, such as rebooting servers, designing and implementing networks and hardware architecture, and interacting with the Windows, Linux / Unix, Database, Web Engineering, and other infrastructure groups to implement builds and projects in the lab. In addition to building lab environments for the ongoing capacity testing efforts, the engineer will also assist in performance analysis and tuning of applications. The ability to perform low-level Kernel tuning will be helpful as some projects will involve working with Linux internals.

Skills Required

Bachelor’s Degree.  Requires 3-5 years of Linux Performance Engineering and/or Linux systems administration & tuning experience.  Requires a strong in-depth knowledge of Linux, Linux performance tuning and experience working with Linux internals.  Kernel tuning would be a big plus.  Requires Scripting, DevOps or Operations Automation experience.  Knowledge of systems performance concepts and their application. Knowledge of basic performance tuning theory. Knowledge of Linux and Windows navigation and administration.   Knowledge and/or experience working with Open Source tools

Skills Desired

Java and/or .NET knowledge and experience. Solid knowledge of performance engineering and tuning concepts desired as well as the ability to work under pressure in a challenging and rewarding environment. Eventually, day-to-day work will include not only include capacity testing efforts, but also deep analysis and tuning. Candidates with prior tuning experience will be preferred.
