Minimum Education/Training Required

Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist or Certified Documentation Improvement Specialist with at least 5 years relevant CDI experience. Certified Coding Specialists with at least 5 years’ experience in acute hospital setting and at least 3 years project/supervisory/management experience. Minimum Experience Required

Five years relevant supervisory or management CDI experience at an in-patient hospital.  Experience in a large teaching hospital preferred.  . License, Registration or Certification Required

Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist or Certified Documentation Improvement Specialist and

Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) Skills Required

Effective management, organizational and communication (verbal and written) skills.  Effective analytical and ‘big-picture’ thought processes; Ability to adapt to deadline constraints; Ability to work independently and as a team member.

Duties & Responsibilities

 (In order of importance) % Time Spent Essential Function Indicator Demonstrates behaviors in concert with hospital mission, values, policies, & procedures.

 Responsible for the management and fiscal activities of the following units in Health Information Management (HIM): Coding and Clinical Documentation Improvement.  Responsible for the planning, organizing, directing, decision-making, and controlling of coding and CDI.  Functions as the super-user and trainer for the Clinical Documentation Improvement program and all application software used by CDI staff to code and assign working APR-DRG, Severity of Illness (SOI) and Risk of Mortality (ROM) assignment.  Maintains and updates electronic query templates.  Provides continuing education to the CDI Coders.  Ensures complete and compliant physician documentation to support APR-DRG, SOI and ROM. 60%    

Develops, prepares, reviews and evaluates policies, procedures, and work methods and monitors work flow on an ongoing basis through the use of productivity statistics, workload data and other criteria.  Performs in a proactive manner and anticipates change.  Stays informed of all new activities both inside and outside the department, which may affect work in HIM, adjusts or develops procedures accordingly.    10%   

Communicates effectively both verbally and in written form.  Keeps staff informed through written directives, staff meetings, training classes and individual feedback.  Responds to staff questions, concerns, and suggestions. Participates in meetings with other managers in the hospital.  Resolves administrative or procedural problems between various departments/divisions as required    10%   

Selects, orients, and develops employees.  Oversees staffing schedules for 24 hours/7 days a week and makes judicious use of overtime to get work completed efficiently and on time.  Establishes standards for work performance that apply uniformly to PAD planning and evaluation.  Develops methods and activities for training and promoting staff development to improve skills and knowledge.  Performs employee evaluations and approves those prepared by the supervisors.   Conducts disciplinary action and follow-up as needed.  Teaches and trains other department/hospital staff as required.     10%   

Represents the director in meetings or committees as assigned.  In the absence of the director, works jointly with the other Health Information Manager in assuming the duties of planning, coordinating and directing the department activities.   10%
