Job Description
Responsibilities:
- Candidate must be flexible and able to work some nights and weekends (Support can be provided from home/remotely).
- We have an immediate need for Applications Support Engineer to join our team. The primary responsibilities extend across two major functional areas:
- The operational health of web-based application systems in a production environment the integration and deployment of changes to component applications produced by development teams.
- The ideal candidate accomplishes this by applying a diverse set of technical skills and experiences across a multitude of application and infrastructure technologies, and by maintaining excellent relationships with technology and business stakeholders. The primary focus for this particular position involves support of a collection of custom web-applications and systems operating on Windows 2008 Servers / IIS7.x and Oracle 11g Databases.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
- SDLC Support Responsibilities - Participates with Software Development teams in SDLC process - Tasks include:
- Design input and review of Change Requests
- Impact Analysis of planned releases / enhancements
- Verifying Operational Documentation
- Coordinating deployment of components to QA and Production environments
- Verifies Functional capabilities of deployed components (functional testing)
- Operational Support Responsibilities
- Research, implement solutions to production issues
- Identifies production issues / concerns
- Conducts root-cause analysis of issues
- Identifies corrective actions for production issues
- Coordinates resolution of issues with other technical “Infrastructure” staff
- Provide Tier 2 support to issues escalated from Helpdesk teams. Interfaces with development teams to resolve Tier 3 'in code' issues.
- Provides On-call support for escalated off-hours issues.
- Provides Support for weekend maintenance activities being performed by Infrastructure teams.
- Identifies process and tools to improve operational integrity of environment
- Designs, develops and implements documentation or tools appropriate to the maintenance of application platforms
- Identifies opportunity for automation of aforementioned activities. Looks for synergies within the production environment from the perspective of complex, cost, and maintenance activity reduction.
- Maintain a high degree of involvement with Infrastructure teams regarding application needs or repercussions of infrastructure changes
- Performs other related duties as required
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (Minimum Requirements):
- Understanding of typical Windows technologies and environments. Including Windows 2008 Server configurations, File Clusters, Web Servers,
- Experience installing and administering the following software packages:
- IIS v7.x (Websites, applications pools, etc)
- Oracle 11g components (client tools)
- .NET Framework
- Windows monitoring tools , Event Viewer / PerfMon / Resource Monitors
- Windows and SQL scripting experience to produce solutions and perform troubleshooting
- Strong grasp of Internet network concepts, protocols and associated services (TCP/IP, HTTP, SSL Certs)
- Strong grasp of relational databases and SQL. Candidate must be capable enough in SQL to queries to investigate application errors and perform end-2-end troubleshooting.
- Strong understanding of application development. Ideal candidate will have some implementation experience in a 3rd or 4th generation language, be capable of understanding and deconstructing program flow, and be conversant with developers on design and implementation options. Familiar with source management tools such as CVS and/or Subversion.
- Understanding of SDLC practices, including requirements gathering, design, impact analysis, implementation, testing, deployment, remediation and operation
- Experience administering/maintaining multi-tier application systems in a production environment. Candidate must be able to rapidly deconstruct systems having minimal supporting documentation, break points requiring monitoring, and other issues.
- Strong, methodical troubleshooting skills
- Very strong analytical skills. Candidate will frequently be required to analyze and identify solutions to production problems. Requires a great degree of resourcefulness for uncovering disparate data points and correlating them.
- Ability to maintain own workflow, prioritizes with respect to departmental or organizational priorities, and complete work with minimal supervision.
- Requires strong organizational habits and time management.
- Ability to respond to frequent pressure to meet deadlines when work speed and sustained accuracy are paramount
- Ability to provide off-hours operational support
- Follows IT industry trends and developments. Will be leaned on for new ideas on process and product recommendations.
- Strong communication (both verbal and written) and customer service skills
- Ability to exchange information with technical and non-technical individuals in a clear and concise manner
Education & Experience (Minimum Requirements):
- High School Diploma 13 + years in IT 2-3 years in a Operations Support role.
- 5-8 years in a technical role involving applications operation and management, preferably in a full service production environment with a Bachelors degree in Computer Science or related discipline
Additional Qualifications:
Bachelors degree in Computer Science or related discipline preffered
Experience working in all of the areas of responsibility described strongly preferred
Other relevant education and/or experience may be substituted.
