Bowhead is looking for a Composites Engineer to perform engineering work in the area of composites manufacturing and testing.  The Scientist must be willing to take on leadership responsibilities and develop strategies for test and evaluation of composite systems.  Duties will include:

  • Fabrication of traditional and novel laminate composite architectures.
  • Mechanical characterization.
  • Networking with industrial partners to collect custom materials.
  • Performing design of experiments to create test matrices for materials evaluation.
  • Mentoring younger engineers.
  • Building new prepreg capabilities.
  • Leading the design and development to stand-up a developmental prepreg fabrication line.
  • Annual reporting of results in public forums via presentations at meetings, and technical and journal reports designed to demonstrate our customer’s leading position in the composites industry.

This job requires lifting up to 50 pounds.

Required Skills
  • Knowledge of and experience with prepreg manufacture, adhesive manufacture or aerospace manufacturing methods using these material forms.
  • Basic understanding of fiber wet-out and resin/fiber interactions.
  • Familiarity with fabrication methods such as resin transfer molding (RTM), vacuum assisted RTM (VARTM), and autoclave prepreg consolidation methods.
  • Knowledge of processing materials such as b-staged resins, thermosets, and thermoplastics.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and the ability to drive a vehicle.

Desired Skills

  • Knowledge of composite design, commercial fabrication methods, and ASTM test standards.

SECURITY CLEARANCE: Must be able to maintain a clearance at the TOP SECRET level.

Required Experience

Master’s or Doctoral degree with emphasis in Engineering disciplines such as Composites Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, or equivalent Engineering discipline.  Other science disciplines will be considered with appropriate experience.  Minimum of 4 years, 5-7 years preferred, of documented research in composites, resins, adhesives and related fields (following advanced degree completion - thesis work does not count as experience for this opportunity). 

 

Candidates must pass a Non-DOT pre-employment drug screening, and must follow all Non-DOT Drug and Alcohol Testing Program Requirements.
