The Script April showers bring May flowers. And what do May flowers bring? Your letters!  so it’s time to answer your questions during a segment we like to call “Ask Cat.” I'm Cat Miller and this is DiceTV. Here’s the first question. Dear Cat, I’m moving out of the area, so I’m wondering if I should ask my former managers for letters of recommendation, or stay-in-touch and continue to provide their contact information to prospective employers. Let your references know about your move and ask if they’re willing to speak with prospective employers. Since you don’t want to lose valuable contacts, this gives you the opportunity to stay in-touch  and maintain your relationships with former managers throughout your career. If they don’t want to receive calls, then just ask for a letter of recommendation. Dear Cat: I have a disability, but I’m wondering if I should disclose it in my resume or cover letter? Screeners look for reasons to eliminate candidates, so don’t mention your disability. If you need a reasonable accommodation to perform your job duties, address it at the end of the interview. If you can perform your job duties without an accommodation, don’t even mention your disability. Dear Cat: I’m just finishing a three-month contract-to-hire gig, but the full-time offer is lower than I expected. In fact, it’s lower than my hourly contract rate. I can’t afford to stay, so I’ve started looking for another job, but how can I leave without burning a bridge? First, express your disappointment to your supervisor and the agency, so the company has a chance to increase their offer before you leave. If your boss can’t sweeten the pot, give him ample notice and offer to stay on as a contractor and train your replacement. You can’t eliminate the pain of your departure, but you can mitigate the impact by offering to ease the transition for a new employee. If you have a question for me, send it to Cat @ That's Cat @ and put "Ask Cat" in the subject line. I’m Cat Miller and this has been DiceTV. We now return you to your regular desktop.
