Sears Holdings Corporation operates through its subsidiaries, including Sears, Roebuck and Co. and Kmart Corporation.
Sears, Roebuck & Co. began as a watch store in 1893. In 1925, Sears opened its first retail store and catalog center on Chicago s west side. The growth of the catalog format is an early indicator of the vision of the company, and the success it would achieve through a dedication to meeting customers needs with quality products and exceptional service. From our expansion from mail-order to retail stores, to the launch of Allstate Insurance and the development of the visionary ShopYourWay social shopping platform, the Sears name has been synonymous with forward-thinking and retail advancement for more than 100 years.
In 1899, the company that would become Kmart was opened by Sebastian Spering Kresge as a modest nickel-and-dime store in downtown Detroit. The low prices appealed to shoppers, and the chain quickly grew into one of the nation s preeminent retailers. Today, Kmart has more than 1,500 stores and an Internet presence that reaches millions of customers. The Kmart name has become a symbol of Americana, standing for quality products at low prices.
The merger of Kmart and Sears as Sears Holdings Corporation (SHC) closed on March 24, 2005, and the company continues to market products under brands held by both companies. SHC s corporate headquarters are in Hoffman Estates, Ill.
