While everyone has relationships, it\u2019s different when you have to amass and maintain those relationships as a core part of your business. Relationships are not formed instantly. They all take time to initiate and build. Even though it\u2019s understood that relationships take time, there are ways to streamline the process and be more effective with your relationship building. Given Dice\u2019s focus, we\u2019re most interested in seeking out specific ways to build relationships with those in the tech industry. Respect Their Expert Knowledge<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen building relationships with the technologically-savvy, the best thing you can do is bow to their superior knowledge,\u201d said Lauren Miller (<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/lg4w\">@lg4w<\/a>), VP of Public Relations for Leadership Gold 4 Women (LG4W). \u201cDevelopers are very proud of their work,\u201d echoed Justin Sherratt (<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/justinsherratt\">@justinsherratt<\/a>), CEO of Gawoop, makers of SORTBOX. \u201cIf a developer worked on a team and their project was a success, letting them know it is respected is important.\u201d By offering a compliment to something they really care about, you will get a warm response when you ask to be introduced to other members of their team, Sheratt said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-use-the-relationship-to-build-your-knowledge\"><strong>2. Use the Relationship to Build Your Knowledge<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re trying to learn about a new technology, go to the people who know it the best. Make it clear the reason you want to connect is to learn more about the subject for which they\u2019re an expert. \u201cCandidates are usually flattered and their passion around the subject will show,\u201d said Jennifer Hasche (<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/jenniferINTUIT\">@jenniferINTUIT<\/a>), Sourcing Manager at <a href=\"http:\/\/intuit.com\/\">Intuit<\/a>. Tiffany Jennings (<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/writingthesurf\">@writingthesurf<\/a>), Digital Zookeeper at <a href=\"http:\/\/vitamintalent.com\/\">Vitamin T<\/a>, has a crew of go-to talent she always reaches out to regarding new technologies and languages. \u201cI&#8217;ve earned their respect by proving I want to understand what they do, not just because I placed them in a job,\u201d said Jennings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-don-t-fake-it\"><strong>3. Don\u2019t Fake It<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLearn enough to at least know the difference between Ruby and PHP, but also learn enough to just shut up if you don&#8217;t know,\u201d said Gawoop\u2019s Sherratt. While it can be important to be somewhat tech savvy, don\u2019t try to pull a fast one over tech stars. They can sniff out fakes a mile away. Don\u2019t try to pretend you\u2019re tech savvy when you\u2019re not, said LG4W\u2019s Miller who is admittedly \u201ca complete boob about technology.\u201d \u201cTech people make fun of non-tech posers,\u201d Miller said. \u201cGet in on the joke, and make fun of yourself. You will find that candor goes much further than grandstanding.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-give-them-a-problem-to-solve\"><strong>4. Give Them a Problem to Solve<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI try very hard to recruit motivated problem solvers,\u201d said RJ Owen (<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/rjowen\">@rjowen<\/a>), Experience Planner: Business and Technology at EffectiveUI. To identify those people, Owen will ask questions over email or ask a candidate to complete a survey online. \u201cI want to see if my candidate has the motivation to look something up online or run some code through their compiler, and if they&#8217;re good enough at solving a problem to know where to look,\u201d said Owen. \u201cYou&#8217;d be amazed how many people just respond with \u2018I don&#8217;t know\u2019 and don&#8217;t even bother to try and find the answer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-be-a-resource-by-sharing-via-social-media-15-minutes-a-day\"><strong>5. Be a Resource by Sharing Via Social Media 15 Minutes a Day<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMany recruiters are using social media to share job postings, but that doesn&#8217;t help build or maintain relationships. Providing valuable and relevant information does,\u201d said Becky Carroll (<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/bcarroll7\">@bcarroll7<\/a>), author of <a href=\"http:\/\/petraconsultinggroup.com\/\">\u201cHidden Power of Your Customers.\u201d<\/a> Carroll advises you take 15 minutes a day social sites such as Twitter and Facebook and provide some industry value with information such as industry trends in jobs, salary research, and tips on what\u2019s hot in the field. If you\u2019re not a tech expert, simply follow the experts on social networks and retweet their advice with attribution. \u201cThe goal is to be a trusted resource and stay top of mind,\u201d said Carroll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-connect-on-a-mutual-passion-even-if-it-s-not-tech\"><strong>6. Connect On a Mutual Passion Even If It\u2019s Not Tech<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Just because you\u2019re not a techie doesn\u2019t mean you can\u2019t have a relationship based on a mutual passion. \u201cI was not a technical person so I never tried to fake it,\u201d said Matt Hixson (<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/matthixson\">@matthixson<\/a>), CEO of <a href=\"http:\/\/telagence.com\/\">Tellagence<\/a>, who did connect with geeks on their mutual obsession with social media. Connecting there allowed him to form many long lasting relationships based on that interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-7-get-offline-and-go-where-they-are\"><strong>7. Get Offline and Go Where They Are<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re trying to fill an impossible role, then you need to put yourself in the center of the community. Casey Kugler (<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/caseyrecruitsdc\">@CaseyRecruitsDC<\/a>), Account Manager for <a href=\"http:\/\/aetea.com\/\">AETEA Information Technology<\/a> was faced with filling a Python developer position. As part of his strategy, he made an effort to get out into the Python community and attended meetups and networking events that focused on development, even though he was completely lost on the events\u2019 technical aspects. \u201cI could tell that it made a difference to the developers that I was making an effort to get out there and learn how they lived their lives,\u201d said Kugler who ended up placing a person in the Python role through a referral of another referral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-8-host-virtual-happy-hours-twitter-chats\"><strong>8. Host Virtual Happy Hours\/Twitter Chats<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Host regular virtual Twitter events and create a Twitter handle and hashtag that serves as the connecting resource for your niche market, advised Joey V. Price (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/JVPsaid\">@JVPsaid<\/a>), CEO of <a href=\"http:\/\/jumpstart-hr.com\/\">Jumpstart:HR<\/a>. Price has found that if you \u201chelp candidates first they will remember the tips you give and attach your name to the great advice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-9-take-an-interest-in-their-personal-life\"><strong>9. Take an Interest in Their Personal Life<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In an effort to make everyone feel special, Shari Burnard Ostrom (<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/TheEdCafe\">@TheEdCafe<\/a>), Instructor at <a href=\"http:\/\/queensu.ca\/\">Queen\u2019s University<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/utoronto.ca\/\">University of Toronto<\/a>, takes notes on meetings beyond just the technical specifics. She\u2019ll note boyfriend and girlfriend names, kids, hobbies, events, etc. It gives her something to review before their next meeting. \u201cWhen I reconnect I can make reference to something from the past encounter which helps build rapport,\u201d said Ostrom. Even before you have that first meeting you can delve into their social profiles for something personal. \u201cDon&#8217;t immediately start discussing the technology and that you&#8217;ve got a nice job in that area, but search for something human in their profile and start discussing that more human topic,\u201d said Gordon Lokenberg (<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/gordonlokenberg\">@gordonlokenberg<\/a>), Recruiter for Lokenberg Recruitment Services. \u201cThe more practice you develop in using this method, the easier it becomes to establish common ground and your business relationship shifts over to camaraderie,\u201d said Mike Barefoot (<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/redzonejobs\">@redzonejobs<\/a>), Senior Account Executive at <a href=\"http:\/\/redzoneresources.com\/\">Red Zone Resources<\/a>. \u201cManagers and candidates always tend to gravitate toward and want to do business with someone they like.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-10-use-a-crm-tool-to-manage-conversations\"><strong>10. Use a CRM Tool to Manage Conversations<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLayering a customer relationship management (CRM) application in front of your applicant tracking system (ATS) allows you to have a two-way relationship where you are messaging specific communities of talent,\u201d said Justin Clem (@<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/justin_clem\">Justin_Clem<\/a>), Global Director of Recruiting for <a href=\"http:\/\/solarwinds.com\/\">Solarwinds<\/a>. Instead of just pushing job regs through the ATS, you can maintain true conversation around your employment brand. Clem, who used to work at Raytheon, offers this possible dialogue as an example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Did you hear that Raytheon just acquired company &#8220;X?&#8221; Click here to read the full article.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Raytheon is going to be at the Dice Career Fair in Dallas, TX, please stop by the booth and say, \u201dHi.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTaking an approach to have meaningful relationships in your talent community rather than managing data in your ATS allows you to have a ready now pipeline of talent that is fully invested into your company&#8217;s employment brand,\u201d said Clem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-11-understand-your-open-roles-from-the-best-people-who-hold-those-positions\"><strong>11. Understand Your Open Roles from the Best People Who Hold Those Positions<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In an effort to better understand how to hire Flex developers, Vitamin T\u2019s Jennings reached out to several rock star Flex developers to set up times to talk. She wasn\u2019t interviewing them for positions. She was just trying to understand her open roles. \u201cThese developers weren&#8217;t looking for work but they were excited to talk about their expertise. And when they were looking for jobs or looking to hire people, I was their first stop because they knew I truly understood the technology,\u201d said Jennings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-12-reach-for-the-rock-stars\"><strong>12. Reach for the Rock Stars<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople get very starstruck and as a result they tend to slowly, steadily climb the ladder of contacts until they hope they have the right contact who can introduce them to the right contact,\u201d said Erica Friedman (<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/yuricon\">@Yuricon<\/a>), President of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yuricon.org\">Yuricon<\/a>. \u201cAt some point, you just gotta let go of the rungs and jump up and shoot for the top.\u201d She reached out to her industry\u2019s mavens, received a response, and others thought it was some miraculous event saying things to her such as \u201cYou are so lucky\u201d or &#8220;I wish I could do this&#8230;&#8221; \u201cBut they all <em>could<\/em> if they simply tried,\u201d said Friedman who advises you to just go ahead and email the CEO of Apple or write to that angel investor you\u2019re hoping to impress. \u201cJump up. It won&#8217;t kill you and you may end up several rungs up,\u201d Friedman said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-13-host-meetups\"><strong>13. Host Meetups<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As the Director of Recruiting, Lorne Epstein (<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/Inside_Job\">@InSide_Job<\/a>), used the credibility of her firm <a href=\"http:\/\/gibbscox.com\/\">Gibbs Cox<\/a> to hold monthly meetings for the Society for Women Engineers in their office. This brought a dozen of so women to their headquarters on a regular basis allowing Epstein to make relationships with the women and that led to G C making a few hires over a period of time. \u201cConsistency and reliability are keys to building a solid relationship. Nothing does this better than a regularly scheduled meeting,\u201d said Esptein.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-14-be-a-connector\"><strong>14. Be a Connector<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Hosting meetups is the act of being a connector on a large scale. You can be a connector on a smaller scale by just introducing people. \u201cHelp others build their network by connecting people who might find a relationship mutually beneficial,\u201d said Caroline McClure (<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/ScoutRockLines\">@ScoutRockLines<\/a>), Principal of <a href=\"http:\/\/scoutrock.com\/\">ScoutRock, LLC<\/a>. Everyone knows the connectors in their industry. You tend to be extremely responsive to any request from them because they\u2019re providing so much value to you and your community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-15-cultivate-an-accelerated-networking-environment\"><strong>15. Cultivate an Accelerated Networking Environment <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Linda Pond (<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/lindapond\">@lindapond<\/a>), author of \u201cTop Secrets of a Girl Entrepreneur\u201d hosts \u201cforced networking\u201d events she calls \u201cIce Augers\u201d which are \u201clike an ice breaker, but we drill down.\u201d At one networking event she randomly split groups into five, and had each group create an imaginary company in only ten minutes. This required a lot of fast-paced discussion and negotiations to come up with a company, product, roles, and company name in that short a time frame. When the time was up, presentations began. Each group introduced their imaginary company, and individuals introduced their real companies as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-16-be-willing-to-take-on-the-burden-of-communication-within-the-relationship\"><strong>16. Be Willing to Take On the Burden of Communication Within the Relationship<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBe willing to keep in touch,\u201d said Edward L. Haletky (<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/texiwill\">@texiwill<\/a>), President of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.astroarch.com\/\">AstroArch Consulting<\/a>. \u201cThere is no such thing as \u2018it\u2019s someone else&#8217;s turn.\u2019 If the relationship is to be maintained, you need to maintain it by being willing to accept and adopt the burden of communication, no matter the form.\u201d Burden of communications usually translates into repetition, and that\u2019s key for building a relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-17-talk-frequently-before-making-your-move\"><strong>17. Talk Frequently Before Making Your Move<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe talk to candidates three or four times before we present them to our clients,\u201d said Andrew Scarano, VP at TCI-Search. \u201cWe have found that on the first one or two interviews a candidate still has his interview face on but by the third or fourth, we are talking about their kids and they are more relaxed and more themselves. Ultimately, it helps us determine if this person will fit into the culture of the client company.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-18-find-reasons-to-contact-people-in-your-network\"><strong>18. Find Reasons to Contact People in Your Network<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many reasons we don\u2019t build relationships is we can\u2019t think of an excuse to reach out. ScoutRock\u2019s McClure offers these suggestions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Forward an interesting article<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Send a thank you note if you used their time or information (even if it was long ago)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Send a birthday card or a holiday card<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Invite them to coffee if you\u2019re going to be in their area<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-19-reach-out-with-a-video-message\"><strong>19. Reach Out With a Video Message<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When I asked my colleagues, \u201cHow do you build relationships?\u201d Gary Anderson (<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/proclaim_me\">@proclaim_me<\/a>), President of <a href=\"http:\/\/netbriefings.com\/\">NetBriefings<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/proclaim.netbriefings.com\/flv\/nb\/nsux9\/nbnsux9108722\/\">sent me a video message<\/a> using his own tool. Undoubtedly, face-to-face meetings are the best ways to form relationships, but we don\u2019t have all the time in the world and if you want the best possible relationship experience without being there, video messages and video conferencing is the next best thing. I can say from personal experience video messages can have a huge impact. It takes work, but the impact can be huge. In fact, back in 2008 I sent out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sparkminute.com\/2008\/12\/27\/i-just-sent-555-personalized-video-holiday-greeting-cards-how-i-did-it\/\">555 personalized video holiday greeting cards<\/a> and the results were outstanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-20-comment-on-their-work\"><strong>20. Comment On Their Work<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you know of a paper, blog, or talk they&#8217;ve given. Sincerely compliment them on their piece of work and an immediate connection is made,\u201d advised Travis Lindemoen (<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/nexusITgroup\">@nexusITgroup<\/a>), Customer Experience Executive for <a href=\"http:\/\/nexusitgroup.com\/\">nexus IT group<\/a>. A compliment is always good, but it\u2019s also ok to engage in debate. It shows that you\u2019ve read the information and you\u2019re intellectually interested in the same topic and are eager to learn more. The problem with just offering a compliment is it usually ends the conversation immediately. While it is nice to be praised for your work, if the goal is to build a relationship, then engage in a conversation around the content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-conclusion-follow-up-and-stay-committed\"><strong>Conclusion: Follow Up and Stay Committed<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One piece of advice I heard from many experts is the need to follow up and do what you say you\u2019re going to do. \u201cIt&#8217;s one thing to say that you want to build a relationship with someone and another thing to follow through and do it,\u201d said Casey Kott, recruiter for <a href=\"http:\/\/sigconsult.com\/\">Signature Consultants<\/a> who has won over clients with his two-year relationship building efforts. While candidates appreciate and recognize persistence, they also notice the complete opposite. Paul McDonald (<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/buildasignhires\">@BuildASignHires<\/a>), Talent Acquisition Manager for <a href=\"http:\/\/buildasign.com\/\">BuildASign.com<\/a> would attend industry specific group meetings in order to build relationships. \u201cThe number one thing that group members would tell me is that people in my field would come once, and they never see them again,\u201d said McDonald. \u201cI wanted to focus on not being that type of a connection.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cThe key to recruiting is relationships.\u201d You\u2019ve heard that so many times that it\u2019s verging on redundant.
