But tricks to help achieve an 85 percent response rate&#8230; well, that sounds nearly impossible. Especially when only 6 percent of tech recruiters get higher than a 50 percent response rate, according to Dice&#8217;s 2015 Social Recruiting Survey. Stacy Zapar[\/caption] So we sought insight from Tenfold&#8217;s Stacy Zapar to hear how she recently got an 85 percent engagement rate in sourcing in-demand mobile developers. Here are the seven tips that this 18-year recruiting veteran had to share.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-use-email\">Use Email<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s right, good ol&#8217; email. Stacy&#8217;s favorite channel is email. Good news: 85 percent of tech pros prefer this channel, too, according to a recent Dice candidate survey. Just don&#8217;t resort to spam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-do-your-homework\">Do Your Homework<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cInvesting time up front will yield results in the back end,\u201d Zapar said. Check all the social profiles you can find and give the candidate\u2019s r\u00e9sum\u00e9 a good read. You\u2019re looking for information that will the following two tips:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"467\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dice.com\/hiring\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/name-spelling.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-999884744\" style=\"width:255px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dice.com\/hiring\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/name-spelling.png.webp 467w, https:\/\/www.dice.com\/hiring\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/name-spelling-300x289.png.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 467px) 100vw, 467px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-personalize-and-customize-your-message\">Personalize and Customize Your Message<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;re probably thinking: &#8220;I know this tip already.&#8221; But take a step back and ask why you are contacting this candidate out of the hundreds (or thousands) of others out there. Maybe you were impressed with a project or skill that stood out. Whatever it is, be sure you mention it to make the candidate feel special. Other tips:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:23px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use the candidate\u2019s name in the intro and make sure to spell it right.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Embed the candidate\u2019s name in the body and close of your email.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mention a post from the candidate&#8217;s blog. According to Stacy, this tactic shoots response rates up to nearly 100 percent. Can&#8217;t find a blog? Reference projects they&#8217;ve worked on, hobbies, anything gathered from social media. (Timesaving Tool: Zapar says she uses tools like <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dice.com\/hiring\/find-candidates\">Dice Open Web<\/a><\/u> to provide instant access to a candidate&#8217;s entire social footprint.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-use-uncommon-commonalities\">Use &#8216;Uncommon Commonalities&#8217;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Maybe the candidate and your spouse went to the same college. Or you once lived in the same town. Or you share the candidate\u2019s interest in kayaking. Bringing up the uncommon commonalities sparks personal connections and makes you stand out from other recruiters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-don-t-prematurely-propose-marriage\">Don&#8217;t Prematurely Propose Marriage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Your goal with the first communication isn\u2019t to sell them on the job. Zapar never pastes the job description into her first email or even includes a link. \u201cThat would be like going on a first date and spilling all your family drama,\u201d Zapar said. \u201cTMI at that point. Flirt a little. Don\u2019t propose marriage up front.\u201d You want to pique their interest and start the conversation. When you eventually get them on the phone, that\u2019s when you can get into the details.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"252\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dice.com\/hiring\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Three-messages-300x252.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-999884770\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-remember-that-it-s-not-about-you\">Remember That It\u2019s Not About You<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Avoid the \u201cI\u201d and \u201cme\u201d and \u201cwe,\u201d Zapar suggests, and instead put the focus on how the job opening might benefit the candidate. \u201cIt\u2019s not about you and your req. It\u2019s about them and their careers.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-don-t-stop-with-one-message\">Don\u2019t Stop with One Message<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Three times is (often) the charm. Be intentional on your follow-up messages. Zapar gave this example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>After 3-4 days<\/strong>: Send a second, non-confrontational message that includes a sense of urgency, i.e., &#8220;Hey, I know we\u2019re all super busy but wanted to follow up and let you know that the Dev team is still really interested in speaking with you. We\u2019re starting to move forward with interviews, and I didn\u2019t want you to miss the bus. Let me know if you have a few minutes to chat.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>After 3-4 more days<\/strong>: Send a low-key sign-off message that&#8217;s polite, professional and asks them to stay in touch. Something along the lines of, &#8220;Hi, sounds like you\u2019re pretty set where you are now. Thanks for letting me pop into your inbox. I hope you\u2019ll stay in touch. Happy to have a quick convo anytime. p.s. The position IS still open, so let me know if you change your mind!&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Zapar believes that taking the time and effort to implement these tips, with a big focus on doing research, can drive engagement gains.
