CATIA Black & White Engineer – Job Description
Position: CATIA Black & White Engineer
Location: Dearborn, MI, Onsite/Hybrid/Remote (As required)
Experience Required: 5–8+ years in CAD Engineering, CATIA V5/V6
 
Overview
The CATIA Black & White Engineer is responsible for validating engineering designs by reviewing, comparing, and analyzing 3D models and 2D drawings (Black & White process) to ensure accuracy, manufacturability, and compliance with engineering standards. This role supports cross-functional teams, ensuring that model updates are correctly captured and released with zero discrepancies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform Black & White checks on engineering models and drawings to ensure full alignment between 3D CAD data and 2D documentation.
  • Validate geometry, annotations, tolerances, GD&T, and product definitions for completeness and accuracy.
  • Review model structures, assemblies, part positioning, and interface points using CATIA V5/V6.
  • Ensure compliance with internal design standards, PLM requirements, and release procedures.
  • Identify discrepancies, document issues, and work with design engineers to resolve them.
  • Support engineering change management (ECNs/ECOs) including model updates and release approvals.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, quality, and simulation teams for cross-functional data validation.
  • Maintain design quality, version control, and release accuracy through PLM (Enovia/Teamcenter).
  • Perform tolerance stack-ups, feasibility checks, and manufacturability reviews as required.

Required Skills & Qualifications
  • Strong hands-on experience with CATIA V5/V6 (Part Design, Assembly Design, Drafting, Surfacing).
  • Deep understanding of Black & White validation processes.
  • Strong knowledge of GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and engineering drawing standards.
  • Experience working with PLM tools such as ENOVIA, Teamcenter, or Windchill.
  • Ability to identify design issues, interface mismatches, and documentation errors.
  • Excellent communication skills to collaborate with global engineering teams.
  • Experience in automotive, aerospace, or mechanical product development preferred.

Preferred Experience
  • Experience supporting Body-in-White (BIW), Interiors, Chassis, Powertrain, or Aerospace Structures.
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes like machining, injection molding, stamping, or composites.
  • Exposure to tolerance analysis tools and dimensional management.
