Title: Data Architect
Location: Remote
Duration: 6 months contract
Role Summary
The Data Architect will be responsible for defining and governing the enterprise data model over an existing Azure Data Lake. This role focuses on data modeling, source to target mapping, semantic consistency, and supporting metadata governance using Microsoft Purview. The emphasis is on making the data understandable, trusted, and analytics ready.
This role establishes canonical data structures, modeling standards, and decision framework that Senior Data Modelers and Data Engineers execute against. This position serves as the single point of accountability for analytical data design and acts as the bridge between business stakeholders, analytics teams, and engineering.
Key Responsibilities
Enterprise Data Architecture & Modeling Strategy
- Define and own the enterprise analytical data model, including subject areas, domains, and canonical entities
- Establish data modeling standards, patterns, and conventions for analytics and reporting
- Define and govern the appropriate use of dimensional, normalized, and hybrid data modeling patterns based on analytical use cases, data domain characteristics, and long-term scalability.
- Ensure consistency of keys, hierarchies, metrics, and definitions across systems
- Partner with business, analytics, and reporting stakeholders to:
- Translate analytical needs into architectural direction
- Align data structures with business outcomes
- Communicate architectural decisions clearly to technical and non-technical audiences
- Serve as the data architecture point of contact in design and planning discussions
Governance & Architectural Oversight
- Own architectural decisions related to:
- Subject area boundariesarea boundaries
- Data domain ownership
- Model extensibility and scalability
- Ensure analytical models are auditable, explainable, and enterprise readyready
- Act as final approver for logical and physical data model designs
Microsoft Purview & Data Governance
- Support Microsoft Purview implementation for the modeled data.
- Ensure data models are fully documented and discoverable via Purview
- Partner with Business teams to support audit and regulatory needs
Leadership & Collaboration
- Provide technical leadership and guidance to senior data modelers
- Act as the primary data modeling point of contact for:
- Business stakeholders
- Analytics teams
- Reporting / BI teams
- Review and approve data models, mappings, and governance artifacts
- Mentor team members on best practices in modeling and metadata management
Required Skills & Experience
Core Skills (Must-Have)
- 12+ years of experience in data warehousing and data modeling
- Strong expertise in:
- Logical, physical, and dimensional data modeling
- Star schemas
- Proven experience with largescale data lakes (Azure preferred)
- Advanced SQL skills (Azure SQL / Synapse or equivalent)
- Strong experience in source to target mapping and semantic modeling to target mapping.
Azure & Analytics Ecosystem
- Familiarity with Azure Data Lake Storage
- Understanding of Azure Synapse Analytics and Power BI from a modeling and lineage perspective
- Awareness of ELT/ETL patterns (hands on pipeline development not required)
