The National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES) is hiring contract assistance with editing advanced technical publications and other material related to the science and engineering enterprise. NCSES publication examples include one-page graphic summaries, congressionally mandated reports, and technical reports with 100+ data tables. A fine eye for detail is a must, along with previous experience in scientific or technical editing.

Position Overview:
The Publishing Lead will play a pivotal role in managing and executing NSF’s publishing strategy while directly contributing to the creation, editing, and distribution of scientific publications. In this hands-on leadership role, the Publishing Lead will oversee the development of scientific content across print, digital, and open-access channels, ensuring high-quality standards are maintained and NSF's mission is effectively communicated to the public. The role will involve direct participation in content creation (as an editor and technical writer), team leadership, and administrative oversight to streamline the publishing process.
Key Responsibilities:
- Team Leadership & Supervision: Lead and mentor a team of publishing professionals, providing guidance, support, and direction to ensure alignment with NSF’s publishing goals and quality standards. Foster collaboration within the team while managing workflow and resource allocation.
- Content Development & Editing: Actively contribute to the creation and refinement of scientific content, including editing manuscripts, reports, and publications to ensure clarity, accuracy, and adherence to NSF’s standards and objectives. Collaborate with subject matter experts to translate technical information into clear, accessible language for a variety of audiences.
- Technical Writing: Produce high-quality technical documents, including research papers, reports, and publications that align with NSF’s mission and communication objectives. Ensure all technical content is properly structured, formatted, and compliant with publishing guidelines.
- Publishing Strategy & Execution: Manage the end-to-end process of publishing, from planning and content development through to distribution across multiple channels (print, digital, and open-access). Ensure all publications are produced within timelines and meet NSF’s strategic goals for outreach and public engagement.
- Administrative Oversight: Provide administrative leadership for the publishing team, including managing schedules, budgets, and reporting. Coordinate with cross-functional teams, including communications and public relations, to align publishing efforts with broader organizational initiatives.
- Quality Assurance & Continuous Improvement: Oversee quality control processes to ensure all materials meet NSF’s publishing standards. Continuously assess and improve publishing processes, identifying opportunities for greater efficiency, innovation, and impact.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree or PhD in a scientific field or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of experience in scientific publishing, including content creation, editorial oversight, and project management.
- Strong understanding of scientific writing, peer-review processes, and academic publishing standards.
- Proficiency with digital publishing tools and content management systems.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
