As the Data Governance Capability Lead, your role is both strategic and tactical. You will guide the development and implementation of data governance and data quality strategies to ensure the data's integrity, confidentiality, and availability for our clients. You will improve the methods, tools, and norms used in different projects and ensure that the capability matches the wider organizational objectives.

You will contribute to business development efforts, helping to secure new client engagements and maintain existing relationships. You are also responsible for ensuring overall client satisfaction with EXL s data governance and quality services.

You will contribute to the body of knowledge within the industry, staying ahead of emerging trends, technologies, and regulations affecting data governance and quality. This may include speaking at conferences, publishing articles, and leading internal training programs.

As a key thought leader in Data Governance, you will leverage AI technologies and innovative data strategies to design and implement governance frameworks that not only ensure compliance and data quality but also elevate data governance as a critical and sellable component of our clients' overarching business objectives, driving meaningful change and delivering tangible value through data excellence.

The Data Governance Capability Lead will engage with clients utilizing all aspects of a Data Management organization including Data Governance, Data Quality, MDM, and AI and must be able to work well in multi-functional and multi-shore project teams. This position may occasionally require travel to client sites in the US.

Essential Duties

60% Delivery

  • Create, implement, and promote Enterprise Data Governance frameworks that improve our clients' operational efficiency and governance and quality maturity.
  • Collaborate with client stakeholders at various levels to plan and execute data strategies and data governance solutions, customized for different client contexts, across various industries.
  • Perform Data Governance evaluations, create recommendations, templates and plans based on the needed outcomes, including the ability to do prioritization, dependency / successor analysis, and resource modeling.
  • Implement tactical Data Governance such as business and technical metadata defining and gathering, data discovery, data catalog and lineage capture, creating standards for governance or quality artifacts, defining metadata metamodels, rollout of data quality rules & processes, etc.
  • Perform tool evaluations and implementations within the data governance capability (DG, DQ, Metadata, Catalog, etc.). Manage vendor relationship on behalf of project or client.
  • Develop Data Governance training strategies and materials, including communication plans, to help the program achieve its goals.
  • Develop, communicate, and apply policies based on client business and risk management needs.
  • Create rationale for client Data Governance initiatives and help position team for implementation engagements.
  • Facilitate Data Governance meetings and workshops.
  • Establish and enforce data governance policies and standards to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
  • Help define and monitor data governance metrics and KPIs to assess effectiveness and identify areas for improvement.
  • Communicate consistently with other team members, leadership and clients outlining status, risks, issues, and key decisions.
  • Assist technical leads and developers with addressing business and data related questions and concerns.
  • Coordinate with Project Managers and participate in project planning.
  • Perform feasibility analysis, scope projects, and work with the project manager to prioritize deliverables.
  • Acts as the liaison between the business units, technology teams and support teams.
  • Establish and maintain trusted relationships with client stakeholders and/or executives.
  • Lead other data governance analysts and project delivery.

30% Capability Growth and Leadership

  • Grow the EXL Data Governance Capability area by adding to best practices, developing new or enhancing existing capabilities, providing thought leadership, supporting the sales team, and coaching more junior colleagues on Data Governance.
  • Support presales activities by:
  • Participating in prospect/client meetings
  • Crafting and delivering content/presentations
  • Developing engagement proposals and responding to RFP s
  • Conducting product demos
  • Maintaining proposal templates.
  • Lead the strategic oversight and management of data governance tool vendor relationships, ensuring alignment with our data governance framework and standards.
  • Evaluating and selecting optimal vendors
  • Negotiating and managing contracts to ensure compliance with data quality, privacy, and security requirements.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for vendors, overseeing the implementation, utilization, and performance of data governance tools.
  • Collaborating with vendors on identifying and pursuing sales leads and opportunities to further enhance our data solutions portfolio.
  • Help clients with data strategy and how to achieve their business objectives and translate their requirements into Data Governance solutions.
  • Utilize your Subject Matter Expertise for Data Governance and Data Quality across EXL to help win and grow existing clients.
  • Develop and implement innovative thought leadership techniques using generative AI within the Data Governance and Data Quality domains.
  • Manage direct team members and lead and coach other team members on Data Governance engagements.
  • Assist with the recruiting of new consulting employees and contract resources by performing technical and non-technical interviews and providing feedback to hiring manager and recruiting.

Education & Experience

  • 15 years of Enterprise Data Management experience
  • 8- 10 years in a Data Governance Lead role in a formal Data Governance program
  • 10+ years of consulting experience strongly preferred
  • 7+ years of experience working collaboratively and/or leading global teams
  • Must have practical experience in the following areas besides data governance:
  • Data Strategy
  • Data Quality
  • Metadata Management including working with metadata platforms/tools

  • Experience working with business and IT functions in a variety of corporate cultures, as both an employee and consultant
  • Experienced working in centralized and federated corporate structures
  • Experience working with business / technical development team / data stewards to clearly document Data Governance and metadata standards, practices, and policies
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with an ability to express complex technical concepts in business terms and complex business concepts in technical terms.
  • Strong experience in interviewing and group facilitation.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Deep knowledge in additional areas of the data management industry (MDM, Data Quality, Data Warehousing, Business Intelligence, Big Data, Cloud, Data Modeling).
  • Demonstrated experience with or certification in data management or related frameworks preferred; ability to attain proficiency and obtain certifications required such as DCAM, DAMA/DMBOK.
  • Demonstrated understanding and ability to apply data governance principles to meet regulatory and compliance requirements, including new regulations as they become available.
  • Display a strong executive presence with the ability to be an effective trusted advisor.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and presentation skills.
  • Strong SQL and data profiling skills required.
  • Expertise with Data Governance and metadata tools such as Collibra, Informatica, Alation, Erwin, Atlan, etc.
  • Knowledge and some experience with cloud native data catalogs is beneficial.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking, logical and analytical problem-solving.
  • Advanced understanding of Enterprise Data Management concepts and prior consulting background.
  • Lead small teams while navigating politics in large client environments.
  • Understand when and how to apply Data Governance tools.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet aggressive deadlines.
  • Ability to travel for client engagements.
  • Shows ability to create new and innovative solutions to problems previously not encountered.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Works in a normal office environment requiring light physical effort by handling objects up to 20 pounds occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently.
