This position is part of Novanta's ATI Industrial Automation business unit. ATI is the world's leading developer of robotic end of arm technologies. Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Research Lead Engineer to join our team. This role involves researching, designing, and implementing new technologies to meet the needs of our customers. The successful candidate will be responsible for driving innovation and improving the efficiency of our products and services.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Research and Development: Conduct research to identify new technologies and applications that can enhance our product offerings.
  • Design and Testing: Design new products or technologies and conduct rigorous testing to ensure their functionality and reliability.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with other engineers, designers, and project managers to ensure that the product meets quality standards.
  • Project Management: Oversee the development process to ensure that the product is delivered on time and within budget.
  • Continuous Learning: Stay up to date with new technologies and industry trends to maintain a competitive edge.


Required Experience, Education, Skills, Training and Competencies
  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Physics or a related field.
  • Proven experience in mechanical, electrical or automation systems design.
  • Strong knowledge of the latest technologies and industry trends in industrial product development and their markets.
  • Self-driven, ability and willingness to work independently and efficiently
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to present technical information to various audiences, often in a group setting.
  • PhD in Engineering (Electrical-, Mechanical-, Controls-, Robotics-, or Mechatronics) Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Applied Physics, or a similar field
  • 5 years' experience in industrial product design, or 2 years' experience with relevant Graduate Degree
  • Strong understanding of physics core concepts (statics, dynamics)
  • Strong understanding of statistics and other relevant mathematics
  • Strong understanding of programming concepts
  • Understanding of MEMS development
  • Comfort with numerical programming tools for data analysis (Python, Matlab, etc.)
  • Experience designing and implementing electromechanical control systems
  • Experience in designing control algorithms applied to Classical, Multivariable Feedback, Model Predictive, and/or Nonlinear controls
  • Hands-on experience processing rich sensor data (such as LIDAR, RADAR, cameras, or force/torque sensors)
  • Numerical optimization
  • Experience developing validation plans
  • Hands-on integration and testing experience
  • Understanding of and ability to wire low-voltage digital and analog signals, power supplies, sensors, relays, etc.
  • Experience writing software programs to interface with hardware devices
  • Familiarity with core computer science concepts including compilers, networking, data structures & algorithms, and real time and/or embedded operating systems.
  • Familiarity with threading and communication issues related to real time operating systems and system implementation
  • Technical mentorship or training experience (formal or informal) is preferred.
  • Exposure to patent disclosure process preferred
  • Systems Engineering/Technical Project Management experience is a plus.
  • Experience with LabView is a plus.
