In this position...

ICE and Thermal Systems Powertrain Systems Engineering (IPTSE) has created a new High Time in Service (HTIS) Quality Team to address Quality issues that typically manifest later in product life, from 12 "Months in Service" (MIS) through to 10 years / 150,000 miles and beyond. These issues are more design/physics related versus the typical 3 MIS supplier and manufacturing defect issues.

Team members will be expected to identify high priority HTIS quality issues via warranty data analysis and projections, discussions with fleets and dealerships and other indicators of "out of warranty" high failure rate issues that negatively impact customer loyalty.

Key tasks will include leading projects addressing this high priority issues working closely with other engineers, Technical Specialists (TS's) and management using Ford's structured problem-solving tools and 8D and Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) Processes, developing root causes and corrective actions and ensuring migration of newly gained knowledge to all applications and updating of corporate memory documents.

What you'll do...
  • Lead/support High Time in Service Quality Projects using Design for Six Sigma / 8D processes on aggressive timelines to support IPTSE's warranty spend and failure rate reduction targets.
  • Responsibilities include evaluation of high warranty spend/failure rate subsystems and engine/vehicle applications with a focus on issues that contribute to > 12 MIS warranty and/or are design/physics related versus supplier quality/manufacturing defect related.
  • Projects will be expected to rapidly work through the Define, Characterize, Optimize and Verify phases of the DFSS process including root cause identification and verification, implementation of interim and permanent correction actions, migration to other applications and prevent recurrence.
  • Project leaders/supporters will be expected to present frequently to senior management project status and results, interface regularly with quality, powerpack and core engineers and TS's and maintain required project documentation including 1-pagers, DFSS documentation, 8D reports, management summary documents, etc.
  • Strong focus on warranty data/trend analysis, part return analysis and physical understanding of engine/powertrain systems and subsystems as key tools to identification root cause and interim and permanent corrective actions.
  • Help develop relationships with dealerships, fleets and other internal/external partners as key sources of information to quickly identify and resolve HTIS quality issues.
  • Ability to design, execute or coordinate analytical and physical testing from component bench level to full powertrain/vehicle testing to identify root cause, replicate quality issues and validate fixes.
  • Identify and document lessons learned for knowledge preservation.
  • Lead/attend team meetings.

You'll have...
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering
  • 2+ plus years of experience leading projects or 2+ Internships.

Even better, you may have...
  • 3+ years of experience with internal combustion engines or after-treatment systems in one or more of the following areas: Design, Test, Controls, Calibration.

  • Familiarity with Ford's quality tools including GSAR, MWATS, QED, etc.
  • Knowledge of key engine/powertrain subsystems including base engine, cooling, airpath, fuel, after-treatment, etc.
