Job Details

Who We Are:

The Rotating Machinery Dynamics Section at Southwest Research Institute is responsible for transitioning ideas and concepts for improving machinery, machinery based power systems, and renewable energy systems into tangible systems that we design, build, and test.

Objectives of this Role:

  • Design, fabricate, assemble, and test custom compressors, pumps, and turbines for advanced power cycles that meet a complex set of requirements.
  • Ensure that machinery casings and pressure containment are safe and meet applicable ASME boiler and pressure vessel codes.
  • Design reliable shafting and rotating components that meet required rotordynamic, stress, and thermal design constraints, and report findings in a variety of formats.
  • Design high temperature components with advanced cooling, thermal barrier systems, and creep life to survive design life requirements.
  • Design and operate reciprocating compressors, pumps, and expanders for use in oil and gas and energy machinery.

Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:

  • Model machine designs in SolidWorks and developing detailed manufacturing drawings for fabrication and assembly.
  • Analyze the mechanical performance of a machine design using applicable engineering principles and advanced analysis software such as ANSYS.
  • Work with a team of engineers with a specialty in controls, thermal management, thermodynamics, and aerodynamics to ensure that the design meets is intended target.
  • Present updates to clients on the status of the design to collaborate and determine whether there is a need to alter design requirements.
  • Present papers at applicable conferences to disseminate knowledge to the public.

Requirements:

  • Requires a Bachelors, Masters or a PhD in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 0 years: Experience and/or graduate work in machine design and analysis.
  • A valid/clear driver's license is required.
