Job Details
Role: Electric Motor Technical Specialist
Work Location: Auburn Hills, MI
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Electric Motor Technical Specialist is responsible for the mechanical design, manufacturing, and assembly of E-Motors for automotive electrification applications. This role includes developing mechanical designs and specifications for a variety of E-Motors used in all types of electrified propulsion systems (LV/HV for MHEVs, PHEVs, and BEVs). The specialist will provide technical guidance for other E-Motor design aspects and drive mechanical design assessments for purchased and in-house designs.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading mechanical design and assembly activities.
- Staying current with E-Motor technologies, including benchmarking.
- Participating in the E-Motors technical roadmap.
- Developing mechanical concepts of E-Motor systems to meet vehicle requirements .
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or equivalent Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
- Minimum of 5 years' experience in mechanical design and assembly of traction E-Motors.
- Strong understanding of E-Motor assembly and subcomponents, including stator assembly, rotor assembly, laminations, cores, housing, copper wire, insulation paper, cooling rings, shafts, bearings, magnets, end rings, balance rings, and position sensors.
- Experience designing, manufacturing, and assembling different mechanical topologies for traction E-Motors (e.g., Induction Machines, Surface Permanent Magnet, Interior Permanent Magnet, PM Assist).
- Proficiency with mechanical principles and analysis (FEA, simulation, and modeling).
- Basic understanding of electromagnetic, thermal, and NVH analysis/testing of E-Motors.
- Experience with DFMEA, PFMEA, DRBTR, DRBFM, and other design-for-manufacturing and assembly processes.
- Prototyping and production experience in E-Motors.
- Materials knowledge of E-Motor subcomponents (electrical steel, magnets, housing, copper, aluminum, insulation paper, varnish, epoxy, shaft, etc.).
- Strong knowledge of E-Motor design principles, operation, testing, reliability, and different technologies (IPM, IM, Axial Flux, SRM).
- Knowledge of E-Motor cooling technologies: water, oil, or hybrid.
- Expertise in GD&T.
- Ability to own test-to-learn processes, data collection, and analysis of mechanical structures and stresses.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work independently or in cross-functional teams.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ph.D. in Mechanical, Electrical, or equivalent Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
- Familiarity with automotive product development processes and project management.
- Proficiency with Teamcenter and NX in a production release environment.
- Experience with DFMEA, DVP&R, DFSS.
- Strong problem-solving, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
