Accessibility specialist responsibilities include:

  • Consult with researchers, designers, and developers to create accessible solutions for all Veterans, regardless of disability.
  • Validate tools for accessibility via automated (aXe, Lighthouse, WAVE, etc.) and manual (JAWS, VoiceOver, NVDA, etc.) testing, including on-device mobile testing (VoiceOver on iPhones, TalkBack on Android).
  • Foster a culture that embraces accessibility and makes it as easy and painless as possible for designers and developers of varying levels of expertise.
  • Collaborate with other accessibility specialists across all teams to ensure the whole team is working well and our high standards are upheld.
  • Maintain detailed documentation of found issues and proposed solutions so that future team members can trace a decision.
  • Advocate for the most accessible solutions.
  • Communicate effectively in Slack, GitHub tickets, and process documents.
  • Contribute metrics to our shared scorecard to demonstrate the impact of the team s accessibility work and show progress towards our key success metrics.
  • Partner with Content and IA team members to ensure highest quality products for Veterans.
  • Help contribute accessibility fixes to the design system team so that everyone can benefit from improvements to common components.
  • Serve as assistive tech expert in user research sessions in case any technical problems arise.
