Job Description

Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Warren, MI three times per week, at minimum.

The Role

We are seeking a Materials Engineer with industry experience in materials science, chemistry, or automotive applications to support a range of automotive battery pack programs. In this role, you will lead material selection efforts in close collaboration with design release engineers, testing laboratories, and suppliers. A strong innovation mindset is essential, as you will work alongside the materials lab to develop and implement solutions for challenges arising in automotive design, manufacturing, and field performance.

What You'll Do
  • Specify technical requirements for materials utilized in Battery and Transmission including but not limited to battery pack cooling systems, venting systems, support structures (including plates and adhesive) and isolation films and tapes
  • Complete requirements request to provide timely engineering direction for supplier quotations
  • Work with engineering functions, suppliers, plant personnel and others to implement cost reduction, methods improvement, product improvements, and to support build programs
  • Develop written materials specifications for automotive materials
  • Release materials for production via Drawing Signoff
  • Assist in implementing material changes
  • Facilitates materials testing --- chemistry, physical testing, failure analysis, as required.
  • Obtain material property data for analysis and development (VDDV/CAE)
  • Interpret test results for feedback to the Product Development or Advanced Teams
  • Communicate information to and from internal and external customer organizations
  • Support issue resolution for Problem Resolution and Tracking System (PRTS)
  • Stay abreast of new technology and competitive products
  • Collaborate with supply base to drive sustainable material development for plastic components used in battery packs

What You'll Need (Required Qualifications)
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Material Science, Metallurgical Engineering, Chemistry or Chemical Engineering, or other Science degree(s)
  • 2 or more years of related industry work experience
  • Understanding of engineering theory and principles of design
  • Understanding of design/manufacturing/material processes
  • Knowledge of polymeric and metallic materials
  • Strong analytical skills - for data analysis, design of experiments, project management, failure analysis, and problem-solving
  • Able to manage numerous projects at the same time and prioritize, as necessary
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with others
  • Ability to work independently and with others

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
  • 3 or more years of related work experience, preferably Engineering
  • DFSS Certification(s)
  • Post undergraduate training or education
  • Knowledge of EV battery
  • Experience with plastics and adhesives
