Job Summary:

Support data center infrastructure by focusing on physical installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and asset tracking of servers and networking hardware within a data center, serving as the essential on-site support ("smart hands") for remote engineering teams.

General Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Unboxing, racking, stacking, and physically installing servers, switches, and other data center equipment.
  • Installing new hardware, replacing faulty components (like interface cards or disk drives), and assisting with initial device configurations under remote guidance.
  • Running, labeling, testing, and managing network and power cables to ensure proper connectivity and organization.
  • Perform basic hardware troubleshooting, power cycling devices, and executing routine maintenance tasks on-site.
  • Conducting physical inventory, verifying serial numbers, and taking digital photos of equipment for asset tracking purposes.
  • Acting as the physical presence (smart hands) for remote engineers, implementing their instructions to complete tasks that require on-site access.

Qualifications

Physical and Mental Requirements:
  • Hands-on experience with IT hardware and the ability to handle equipment carefully and safely.
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve technical issues as they arise.
  • Clear and concise communication skills to relay information to remote teams and clients.
  • Following detailed instructions, safety guidelines, and change control processes.
  • Ability to lift and move equipment and work in a physical data center environment.
  • Must be self-motivated, positive in approach, and professional
  • Must promote the Company culture and mission to all employees, vendors, clients and business partners.
  • Must have proven problem-solving skills, critical thinking skills and the ability to effectively read and write.
  • Must be able to travel within branch territory and/or regional territory as needed.

Education, Certification, License, and Skill Requirements:
  • Must have at least a High School diploma or GED equivalency
  • Two or more years of experience working in a data center as an operations or smart hands technician.
  • Willingness to learn and follow instructions in active (live) data center environments.
  • Basic understanding of fiber types and cable color codes is a plus.
  • Be able to work well with other people
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and MS Project).
  • CCNA, CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+, or other networking certifications preferred
