Job Description

UVA Information Technology Services (ITS) seeks applicants for a DevOps Engineer - Identity Architecture & Engineering to join the enterprise Applications team.

We are seeking an experienced DevOps Engineer to join our team and drive the architecture and engineering of our identity and access management solutions. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in both development and operations, with a focus on identity and access management technologies.

What you will do:

  • Design, build, and maintain a secure and scalable identity and access management infrastructure using DevOps principles and tools
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define and implement identity and access management policies and controls
  • Develop and maintain automation scripts for deployment, monitoring, and management of identity and access management systems


  • Build and maintain containerized solutions using Docker Swarm and Kubernetes
  • Perform regular security assessments and vulnerability scans to identify and address potential risks
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation for the identity and access management infrastructure
  • Stay up to date with emerging technologies and industry best practices related to identity and access management and DevOps
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to the identity and access management infrastructure


  • Participate in on-call rotation for after-hours support and incident management


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years of experience in a DevOps or software engineering role
  • Strong background in automation and scripting, with experience in languages such as Python, Bash, or PowerShell


  • Hands-on experience with containerization and orchestration technologies such as Docker Swarm and Kubernetes
  • Experienced in triage and identifying root causes for issues with dependent systems
  • Experience with configuration management tools such as Ansible or Chef
  • Experience with version control systems such as Git or SVN
  • Experience with continuous integration and deployment tools such as Jenkins or GitLab CI


  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • Strong debugging, critical thinking, and collaborative skills with the ability to learn new skills and technologies
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently as well as part of a team


  • 5+ years of experience with a focus on identity and access management technologies


  • Familiarity with identity and access management protocols and standards such as SAML, LDAP , and OIDC
  • Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS , Azure or Google Cloud Platform
  • Experience with infrastructure automation for provisioning such as Terraform, AWS CloudFormation or Azure ARM Templates
  • Experience with database administration for transactional databases
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements such as FERPA and HIP A A


  • Strong understanding of network security principles and practices
  • Experience with agile development methodologies
  • Certifications in DevOps, cloud, or security-related areas
  • Experience with project management tools such as Jira, Trello, or Asana
  • Experience with collaboration tools such as Slack or Microsoft Teams


  • Experience with remote collaboration and virtual team environments

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: High School Diploma, Bachelor's Degree Preferred.
Experience: 5 years.
Licensure: None.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
