    Principal Engineer - Data & Digital Applications

The Data and Digital Applications (DDA) group in ABS Technology is at the vanguard of maritime digitalization, developing cutting-edge technologies and the processes to qualify such technologies for use. These include capabilities such as Digital Twins, as well as tools that support Structural Health Monitoring, Asset Integrity Management, Predictive Analytics, and Smart functionality. Digital Twin technology is a key element of the lifecycle digital thread (design, build & operation) for ships and other marine assets.

    We are hiring a Principal Engineer to lead the Structural Digital Twin (SDT) Program, responsible for developing methods, processes, and tools for building and implementing Structural Digital Twins for ships and offshore assets. The SDTs will support condition-based class survey programs, operational decision support and optimization, Structural Health Monitoring (SHM), Structural Integrity Management (SIM), and vessel life predictive analytics.

    What You Will Do:
    • Be the go-to Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Structural Digital Twin technology at ABS.
    • Identify, evaluate and adapt over-the-horizon new Technologies in Digital Twins, Structural Health Monitoring and predictive compliance. Propose and prioritize new technology programs and projects related to such technologies to management.
    • Provide guidance and advice to internal and external customers on the types of digital twins and their required maturity levels, including digital twin qualification processes, to meet the application's intended outcomes.
    • Work with team members to develop methodologies for deriving efficient and accurate structural responses from finite element analyses (FEA) or FEA in tandem with actual vessel sensor plans where implemented, leveraging industry best practices such as Reduced Order Models (ROM), Reduced basis FEA, response surface machine learning approaches, etc.
    • Build upon ABS's current expertise in sensor selection and planning, including location and quantity optimization, to improve structural response accuracy.
    • Explore capabilities and collaboration/partnership opportunities with potential Industry partners with demonstrated expertise in the Digital Twin/ Digital Thread area.
    • Generate thought leadership articles for publication in technical journals, write technical papers and reports and participate in industry conferences related to Digital Twins and Health Monitoring. Actively promote the services and capabilities of ABS throughout the technical and business community.
    • Lead or participate in technical project teams in areas of expertise. Deliver high-quality projects on schedule and within budget. Maintain good relations with customers and coworkers. Mentor less experienced engineers.
    • Stay actively informed about technical, business, and management developments affecting ABS and its customers and promptly communicate this information to management.
    • Ensure that all ABS Quality System requirements concerning technical work within assigned areas of responsibility are fulfilled.
    • Align with the ABS mission of promoting the security of life and property and preserving the natural environment.

    The position is located in Spring, Texas (greater Houston area). The successful candidate will have the option to work a hybrid schedule with three (3) days in the ABS Headquarters Office located in Spring, Texas, and two (2) days of remote work.

    What You Will Need:

    Education & Experience
    • Naval Architecture, structural civil, mechanical, or process engineering University degree (B.S. or equivalent)
    • A master's or Ph.D. in engineering is preferred
    • Additional educational qualifications or expertise in Finite Element Analysis and their application within the context of a digital twin will be a plus
    • Additional experience in Data Analytics, Python, or other programming languages and Machine Learning applications makes a stronger candidate
    • 5+ years of relevant structural engineering experience in civil engineering, aerospace, oil and gas, or maritime/offshore industries
    • Deep industry or academic expertise in Digital Twin Technology and structural Health Monitoring, including knowledge in the current state of the art, as well as current trends toward the future
    Core Competencies
    • Experience in advanced Finite Element Analysis techniques for evaluating global and local strength of marine or Offshore structures
    • The ability to apply data analytics and machine learning methods to optimize structural response is preferred
    • The ability to develop and implement logical solutions to complex problems

    • Ability to communicate orally and in writing in the English Language. Strong presentation skills.
