Embedded Firmware Engineering Intern - HVAC Field Devices

What you will do:

You'll collaborate with experienced engineers to support the design, development, and testing of embedded systems that drive building automation and environmental control.
How you will do it:
As an Embedded Firmware Engineering Intern focused on HVAC Field Devices, you will:
- Assist in developing and debugging embedded firmware for HVAC sensors, actuators, and control modules
- Write and maintain test scripts and validation tools for embedded systems
- Participate in engineering-level testing of HVAC field devices and embedded platforms
- Support documentation efforts for firmware architecture, test procedures, and engineering reports
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including hardware, software, and systems engineering
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives in embedded development processes
- Perform other engineering-related tasks and projects as assigned
What we look for
Required Qualifications:
- Pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or related field
- Located in the greater Milwaukee area and available to work full time during the summer and at least 20 hours/week during the semester and full-time during breaks
- Strong programming skills in C/C++ for embedded systems
- Familiarity with microcontroller platforms (e.g., ARM Cortex-M, STM32)
- Understanding of embedded debugging tools (e.g., JTAG, SWD, oscilloscopes)
- Comfortable working with version control systems like Git
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
- Highly organized with strong communication skills
- U.S. citizen or legally authorized to work in the U.S.
- Self-motivated and adaptable to changing priorities
- This is a year-round internship with high expectations.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Exposure to HVAC systems and building automation technologies
- Experience with BACnet, Modbus, or other field communication protocols
- Familiarity with real-time operating systems (RTOS) and low-power embedded design
- Knowledge of scripting languages like Python for test automation
- Ideal candidate is a Freshman or Sophomore seeking long-term internship experience
