What to Expect

We seek a highly motivated hands-on engineer with an electrical engineering background for a position on the Test Products Engineering team, part of the Manufacturing Test Engineering organization. Test Products Engineering focuses on architecting, designing, and building custom products, which are used in both capital equipment for our global manufacturing lines, and in lab environments to support Tesla product development. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of the "machine that builds the machine", working tightly with power electronics, battery electronics, drive systems product design and manufacturing teams, as well as product reliability and compliance testing teams.

The ideal candidate takes pride in their design and aesthetics, hands-on work, analytical ability, communication skills and attention to details. A typical day of work includes working with multidisciplinary and cross functional groups through the design cycles to refine and implement the product specification targets.

What You?ll Do

  • Identify technology gaps or pain points to be addressed in existing manufacturing test applications
  • Research products available in the market and determine whether an in-house solution would provide better function/cost/efficiency/reliability to Tesla
  • Architect novel, robust PCBAs and electrical systems from first principles, balancing cost, lead time, complexity, and features across disciplines
  • Develop product specifications and break down requirements into a detailed execution plan while mentoring/advising junior engineers on sub-system implementation
  • Work closely with product design engineers to architect novel approaches to test products, resulting in lower cost/size/complexity
  • Perform bench testing on electrical designs to validate all features meet specifications
  • Domestic and international travel up to 10%

What You?ll Bring

  • Bachelors, Masters, or Doctor of Philosophy in Electrical or Mechatronic Engineering (or equivalent experience)
  • 5+ years of hands-on design experience in high voltage power electronics (inverters, DC-DC converters, etc...) or battery electronics
  • Proficiency in schematic capture and PCB layout in Altium; Expertise with SPICE simulation; knowledge of PCB manufacturing technologies and DFM
  • Familiarity with lab equipment including but not limited to oscilloscopes, DMMs, function generators, DAQs, high voltage and high current power supplies, power analyzers
  • Proficiency in specifying components, designing circuits, debugging, and analyzing electrical systems
  • Proficiency in EPLAN, AutoCAD Electrical, or similar electrical CAD software
  • Experience with controls/mechatronics/test/automation engineering is a plus
