Your Opportunity

Stantec is seeking a Process Engineer EIT to join our highly successful water practice. This role will focus on process modeling, data interpretation, and applied research within our growing wastewater innovation group. The position is based in Chicago, IL with flexibility for hybrid work and travel to project sites.

Your Key Responsibilities
  • Support process design and optimization for wastewater and resource recovery facilities, including biological nutrient removal and energy-efficient treatment technologies.
  • Apply modeling tools (BioWin, SUMO, GPS-X) to simulate treatment processes and support design decisions.
  • Contribute to technology evaluation, pilot testing, and data analysis to bridge research with full-scale application.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate process insights into practical design solutions.
  • Assist in preparing technical reports, design memos, and presentations for clients and internal teams.
  • Participate in applied research and innovation projects (e.g., Water Research Foundation, DOE, or utility collaborations).
  • Present project findings internally and externally, helping to advance Stantec's technical reputation in process innovation.
  • Contribute to proposal development and technical writing for wastewater projects.

Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • Strong foundational knowledge in wastewater chemistry, microbiology, and process kinetics, with demonstrated ability to apply theory to real systems.
  • Working knowledge of process modeling platforms (BioWin, SUMO, or GPS-X).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to distill technical information into actionable insights.
  • Collaborative mindset and a passion for continuous learning, innovation, and teamwork.
  • EIT certification or eligibility to pursue Professional Engineer (PE) registration in the future.
  • 2-4 years of relevant experience in wastewater process engineering, modeling, or applied research (including graduate research experience).

Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental, Civil, Chemical, or related engineering discipline.
  • Master's or Ph.D. degree preferred, particularly with a focus on wastewater processes.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather

About the Team

Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
