Mainframe System Administrator (Contract)

Department: Innovation and Technology Department
Location: San Bernardino County, CA
Contract Duration: 1 to 5 years (renewed annually)
Schedule:

  • Regular business hours
  • Occasional after-hours and weekend work
  • On-call rotation coverage

Key Responsibilities

  • Install, implement, test, tune, and support IBM and 3rd-party mainframe software
  • Provide technical support for internal customers and application developers
  • Maintain and test disaster recovery procedures and perform system recovery as needed
  • Perform storage management, capacity planning, system performance tuning, and troubleshooting
  • Manage and support mainframe network components (TCP/IP, VIPA, etc.)
  • Collaborate with operations staff to ensure reliable batch and online system operations

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience:
    • At least 5 years of experience as a z/OS system administrator (system programmer)
    • Experience with core z/OS components: IODF, HCD, SMPE, z/OSMF, WLM
    • Expertise in JCL, REXX, Unix System Services, and batch schedulers like ESP or Control-M
    • Proficient in z/OS networking: TCP/IP, VIPA, VTAM, and RACF digital certificate administration
    • Skilled in backup/recovery of datasets and disaster preparedness
  • Education:
    • Minimum of 30 semester (or 45 quarter) units of post-high-school coursework from an accredited institution in:
      • Computer Information Systems
      • Business/Public Administration
      • Or a closely related field
