Controls Engineer

Job Summary
- Designs, develops and tests complex electrical, electronics and software systems based on PLC hardware.
- Works with physicists and other engineers to translate their requirements into requirements. Performs preliminary and final design and supervises the fabrication, assembly, testing, and commissioning of systems.
- Interacts with vendors to optimize technical designs and to obtain optimum cost/performance ratio. Creates 2D design drawings and expedites part fabrications.
- Provides technical direction and supervision to the designers and technicians assigned to specific projects.
- Provides technical documents for procurement, assembly and maintenance procedures and makes presentations for design reviews.
Purpose
- Designs, develops, tests, and verifies complex electrical, electronic and software systems and components. Components of a system will include PLCs, HMIs, and discrete I/O devices and may include analog sensors for air pressure, water flow, vacuum, and temperature.
- Designs, develops, and maintains primarily PLC-based mission-critical safety interlock systems for the APS accelerators. Works as an effective member of a team, working closely with other software and hardware engineers, and other APS personnel involved in associated activities.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor's Degree and +3 years of experience/equivalent.
- Master's Degree and +2 years of experience/equivalent.
Additional Requirements:
- Knowledge in Electrical or Industrial Engineering standards
- Required skill is the ability to create and interpret schematics of complex control systems based on PLCs connected to electromechanical and analog devices.
- Required skill is control system network design and troubleshooting
- Required skill is the ability to program and troubleshoot control systems based on Allen Bradley ControlLogix PLCs using Allen Bradley View Studio 5000.
- (Preferred) Required skill is the ability to program and troubleshoot control systems based on GE Rx3i PLCs using Proficy or PAC Machine Edition
- (Preferred) Required skill is the ability to program and troubleshoot HMIs based on FactoryTalk ME software.
- Preferred skill is the ability to understand and troubleshoot PLC programs using AOIs, UDTs, arrays and task-based routines.
- Preferred skill is the ability to program and troubleshoot control systems based on Allen Bradley GuardLogix PLCs
- Prefer experience using AutoCAD 2016 or newer.
- Preferred experience with the application of functional safety standards (IEC 61508, IEC 62061, IEC 61511, ISO 13849) and the application of functional safety concepts to machine safety and access control.
