Position summary:
The Dynamics 365 Technical Lead will be responsible for conducting a comprehensive assessment of a complex Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 landscape and defining a high-quality, executable technical blueprint for migration to Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations (D365 F&O). This role requires deep technical expertise in AX/D365, strong architectural thinking, hands-on assessment capabilities, and the ability to translate findings into a scalable, future-ready migration roadmap.
Role and Responsibilities
1. AX 2012 Landscape Assessment
Conduct a detailed as-is analysis of the current AX 2012 environment, including codebase, integrations, customizations, workflows, ISVs, BI/Reporting, and data structures.
Review and document all technical objects, custom code, modifications, extensions, and deprecated features.
Assess the health, performance bottlenecks, and technical debt within the AX ecosystem.
Identify gaps, risks, and dependencies related to the target D365 architecture.
2. Technical Blueprint & Migration Architecture
Develop a comprehensive end-to-end technical migration blueprint aligned with Microsoft best practices.
Define the migration strategy across code, data, integrations, reporting, security model, and environments.
Provide a detailed mapping of AX 2012 customizations to D365 extension patterns.
Build a scalable environment strategy including Dev/Test/SIT/UAT/Pre-Prod/Prod setups.
Recommend modernization opportunities Power Platform extensions, Azure integration services, RPA, and automation options.
3. Data & Integration Strategy
Define data migration approach including scope, data cleansing, data modeling, and cutover plan.
Develop integration architecture using Azure services, D365 APIs, and hybrid patterns.
Identify and rationalize legacy interfaces and propose modern replacements.
4. Technical Governance & Quality Assurance
Establish coding standards, extension methodologies, and DevOps practices for the migration program.
Ensure architecture aligns with enterprise standards, security guidelines, and compliance needs.
Provide impact analysis, feasibility assessments, and technical risk mitigation plans.
5. Collaboration & Stakeholder Management
Work closely with functional leads, program managers, business SMEs, and Microsoft counterparts.
Facilitate technical workshops, discovery sessions, and solution walkthroughs.
Present migration strategy, technical findings, and recommendations to senior leadership.
6. Guidance & Leadership
Lead technical teams in assessment and blueprinting activities.
Mentor developers, architects, and technical consultants on D365 extension patterns and migration best practices.
Support effort estimation, workstream planning, and resource modeling.
Required Qualifications & Experience
10 15+ years of experience in Microsoft Dynamics ERP, with deep expertise in AX 2012 and D365 F&O.
Proven experience leading large-scale AX to D365 migrations, including assessment and architecture definition.
Strong understanding of D365 extension model, X++, Azure DevOps, LCS, Data Management Framework, and dual-write/Dataverse concepts.
Hands-on knowledge of Azure Integration Services (APIM, Service Bus, Logic Apps), SQL, Power Platform, and reporting tools.
Excellent technical documentation, analytical, and solutioning skills.
Ability to simplify complex technical findings for business and leadership audiences.
Preferred Skills
Experience with multi-entity, multi-region or complex customization-heavy AX landscapes.
Exposure to ISVs and industry-specific D365 add-ons.
Familiarity with cloud modernization patterns and end-to-end solution architecture.
Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills.
