Job Description

The McIntire School of Commerce is looking for a talented individual to serve as an Enterprise Systems Engineer. This individual will administer and design School systems to include secure access, data safety and integrity, and disaster recovery. The engineer will maintain networked servers and cloud-based platforms, provisioning secure access and integration with other School systems. When necessary, the engineer will troubleshoot networks, systems, and applications to correct operational failures. The engineer will coordinate with other McIntire IT or UVA Information Technology Services (ITS) personnel as needed to troubleshoot issues.

The engineer will work closely with faculty to provide support for their research computing and storage needs on UVA internal systems, Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, and other platforms. When requested, the engineer will provide cost estimates to faculty on the use of these platforms. The engineer will work with ITS and third-parties to ensure that these services are available and accessible to appropriate faculty, and will grant access to outside parties where appropriate and required.

The engineer will work closely with McIntire Help Desk staff to troubleshoot end user issues on common platforms such as Microsoft Office365, Active Directory, Kaltura, Zoom, and others. The ideal candidate will have experience working directly with end users.

The ideal candidate will be an accomplished system administrator with experience in the public and/or nonprofit sectors. A strong candidate also should have extensive knowledge of the academic environment and a track record that includes:
  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and at least 5 years as a system administrator / computer engineer
  • 9 years of related work experience may be considered in lieu of a degree
  • Familiarity with the Windows server environment, including the System Center and virtual machine management;
  • Expertise in Microsoft PowerShell, including the ability to build scripts from scratch;
  • A passion for technology, and a desire to innovate;
  • Ability to work independently and with a team;
  • Experience being a part of a community that focuses on a quest for excellence;
  • Building diversity and instilling values related to equity and inclusion;
  • Working successfully with multiple constituencies and within layered governance structures;
  • Experience serving as a decision maker with strong negotiation and problem-solving abilities;
  • Success in the customer service culture; and
  • An adaptable and resilient attitude.

Anticipated hiring range $85,000 - $115,000

The selected candidate will be required to complete a background check at time of offer per University Policy.
