Job Summary

The Vehicle Systems Division (VSD) sits at the center of the ideas and data behind current and future systems supplying innovative research and development; technical evaluations during the acquisition process; conceptual and detailed design; assembly, integration, and test; and operational support. Comprised primarily of highly-trained mechanical and aerospace engineers, VSD provides national expertise in the areas of vehicle engineering; guidance, navigation, and controls; robotics; electro-mechanical devices; embedded systems; fluid mechanics; propulsion; thermal control; orbital mechanics; mechanisms; structures; structural dynamics; and dynamic environments.

The Space Systems Section in the Mechanical Systems Department provides technical support in design, analysis, integration, and testing of moving mechanical assemblies in space vehicles. All members of the section dynamically interact with other experts within the Aerospace Corporation, program offices, customers, and contractors to ensure mission success. The position will also provide opportunities to broaden one's experience in the areas of launch vehicle mechanisms and explosive ordnance, in addition to expanding departmental responsibilities. This is a full-time position based in El Segundo, CA.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Perform analyses, modeling, planning, and reviews; and support hardware integration and test activities associated with moving mechanical assemblies on space and launch vehicles
  • Review and evaluate mechanism designs, test plans, test data, analyses, and results
  • Provide technical support in technical exchange meetings, design reviews, hardware acceptance reviews, and in hardware integration and test activities
  • Use existing tools or develop new tools to assess mechanical component design and perform multi-body dynamics analyses
  • Develop advanced analytical techniques, concepts, and tools
  • Prepare reports and deliver oral presentations as needed
  • Travel to customer and contractor facilities to support relevant reviews and testing as needed

What You Need to be Successful

Minimum Requirements:

Sr. Member of Technical Staff
  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM field or equivalent
  • Typically (5) or more years of applicable professional or educational experience is required in the development of moving mechanical assemblies on space and launch vehicles
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint on PC and/or Mac
  • Familiar with software development with C, C++, Java, Matlab, Python, or FORTRAN to understand, compile, troubleshoot, modify, and create software tools
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and present technical material to colleagues, contractors, and customers
  • Willingness to occasionally travel and to work off-business hours to support customer needs (as required)
  • This position requires ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the US government. U.S citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.

Engineering Specialist

Same requirements as a Sr. Member of Technical Staff noted above, in addition to:
  • Typically (8) or more years of applicable professional or educational experience is required in the development of moving mechanical assemblies on space and launch vehicles

  • Experience in mechanical designs, mass properties, dynamics, and computer-aided design, materials, and manufacturing engineering and technology
  • Experience in hardware integration and testing
  • Experience in multi-body dynamics analysis
  • Experience with or coursework in machine design or mechanisms
  • Experience using and developing software and scripts on Windows, MacOS X, Linux, and/or Unix systems
  • Knowledge in engineering statistics
  • Experience developing and maintaining online procedures and command media
