The Dean's Office within the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) at the University of Virginia (UVA) seeks applications for a Research Computing Engineer. The School of Engineering and Applied Science consists of 8 departments across the field of engineering. The school has seen tremendous growth in student population and faculty, as well as in its research expenditures in recent years. Reporting to the Engineering IT Director of Operations, the Infrastructure Manager will direct and contribute to the strategic planning process (including both short- and long-term initiatives,) that establish the school's information technology strategic direction while supporting the University's mission.

The Research Computing Engineer will ensure the stability, integrity, and efficient operation of various information systems that support research computing functions. This is achieved by:
  • Providing functional and empirical analysis related to the design, development, and implementation of research systems, including hardware, utility software, development software, and diagnostic software.
  • Planning and implementing system integrations with lab instruments and other systems. This includes cybersecurity assessments when needed.
  • Monitoring, maintaining, supporting, and optimizing software and associated hardware and operating systems.
  • Instituting and supporting best cybersecurity and risk management practices in conformance with University and School policies, standards, and guidelines. This includes data protection and disaster recovery.
  • Aiding in the development of School research computing policies, standards, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Serving as a liaison and between researchers and other University research computing resources.
  • Supporting research compliance requirements such as CUI and ITAR as required.

  • Interviewing prospective researchers and provide estimations of computation and storage needs for start-up packages.
  • Work with researchers to design and develop system configurations, complex workflows, and system integration procedures.
  • Support researchers whose projects are under compliance restrictions, including, but not exclusive to, CUI and ITAR.
  • Document deployed systems and their integration points.
  • Ensure that systems are kept to current support and patch levels, or develop and implement cybersecurity mitigation strategies if required to support specific research.
  • Provide ongoing technical assistance to researchers in upgrade and system enhancement projects. May assist other systems programmers to effectively utilize the systems developed.
  • Implement data protection and disaster recovery procedures and ensure that systems meet high availability standards.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS, Computer Engineering or related discipline is required. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Extensive experience in the administration of Linux systems.
  • Experience with building and maintaining open-source research software on Linux, Windows, and macOS systems.
  • Experience with software installation, job scheduling, and resource management on High Performance Computing systems.
  • Experience with the management of research software licensing.
  • Experience with CUI, ITAR, and other data compliance standards.
  • Experience in central management systems, such as Ansible or Puppet.
  • Experience with data protection and risk management practices.
  • At least five years of experience is required.
  • Applicant must be a US Person, either a or a Legal Permanent Resident.

Anticipated Hiring Range: $87,000 - $96,500 commensurate with education and experience.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
