The NGINX Business Unit at F5 is searching for talented and passionate team members who can lead our agile teams, called squads, in a hybrid role we call a Squad Leader . A squad leader is a position that brings together the disciplines of Program Management, Scrum Master and a little Product Owner into a single role that strives to enable teams to deliver high quality software solutions in a fast-paced, agile, startup-like environment. This role is empowered to advocate for the squad and own and drive squad delivery. Position Summary

The mission of the squad leader is to coordinate between all other functions in the squad and to drive the product development process. A squad leader owns and drives the squad. You are their advocate, and constantly working to make sure they can be successful. You keep your eye on the big picture and help make sure the team members can as well. A Squad Leader collaborates regularly with development leaders, software and quality engineers, architects, Product Managers, and VPs. The squad leader oversees the product development process by ensuring the projects undertaken in the squad are well-defined, projects are aligned with the roadmap, stories are well-defined, the backlog is groomed and prioritized, sprints are planned based on the backlog, sprints are started/completed on time, daily standups are held, and that any issues raised are promptly resolved.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Work with Product Management to translate customer problems into high-level requirements, epics and stories, properly prioritized so that teams have what they need to deliver the right increment of customer value.
  • Own and drive team delivery by working closely with engineering leadership, Product Management and quality engineering to the teams have what they need to deliver high quality customer incremental value. This includes
  • Clarifying requirements with clear acceptance criteria with Product Management
  • Coordinate design work with UX
  • Sequencing and refining of work to realize the design and delivery
  • Ensuring the teams are able to meet the quality and security standards
  • Coordinating dependencies with other teams
  • Ensuring the squads are enabled to be effective by ensuring they have clear understanding of the vision and customer requirements, the right skill sets and resources, a refined backlog that gives them enough detail and clarity to start delivering customer value and that dependencies and communications between teams provide good clarity and alignment.
  • Drive sprint ceremonies working with other Squad Leaders, Product Management, Engineering management and other functions to enable planning events, backlog and roadmap reviews and team retrospectives and demos.
  • Continuously advocate for team health, efficiency and effectiveness by working to unblock team members and other teams, manage and communicate risks and helping the teams self-organize to be more effective.
  • Communicate the delivery expectations for customer value and dependencies to partners and leadership.
  • Represent squad work (product/features) in company-wide presentations (with PM partner)
  • Lead the team in creating execution plans, decomposing work and coordinating with partner teams to ensure delivery, organizing and facilitating meetings as needed and communicating decisions and plans
  • Take on projects and work cross-organizationally as needed to facilitate communication, alignment and efficient quality delivery with partner teams across F5.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated strong communication and collaboration skills with an ability to communicate effectively across written, verbal and presentation formats to a variety of audiences from engineer to Executives
  • Experience working with remote teams and team members desired
  • Demonstrated effective use of collaboration tools to facilitate effective communication and distributed collaboration required
  • Ability to take initiative and apply critical thinking techniques to analyze problems, develop solutions or manage risk
  • Experience with at least one Agile methodology such as Scrum, Lean, XP required along with demonstrated application of agile mindset and principles
  • Demonstrates servant leadership and instinct for team empowerment and self-organization bringing energy and team building skills
  • Knowledge and experience of using modern agile management tools such as JIRA and Confluence highly desired
  • Experience with CI/CD deployment of cloud solutions a strong plus
  • Demonstrated experience delivering complex software projects and solutions effectively through Agile methodologies on a regular release cadence.
  • Experience working with Agile projects and processes with more than 5 teams a strong plus
  • Experience working and collaborating cross-functionality and cross-organizationally to align dependencies and deliverables.
  • Ability to lead through influence to drive forward both the team and program;


  • BSEE, BSCS or other Engineering Technology collegiate degree;
  • Minimum 5+ years experience
  • 2+ years facilitating and delivering projects at technology-based companies or technical domains as a program manager, project manager or scrum master required
  • 2+ years of Scrum & Agile experience desired
  • Certified Scrum Master or other Agile certification a plus
  • Travel up to 15% may be required
