The Health Science Technology (HST) department at the University of Minnesota seeks an experienced NLP / Analytics Developer to conduct natural language processing (NLP) and other development and analytics efforts for schools and units within the University of Minnesota’s health sciences community and beyond, in support of various operational, decision making, strategic, and research initiatives. Among other duties, this position will also help to advance the HST department’s work in the space of NLP. Ideal candidates will demonstrate flexibility and a solutions-focused, positive approach to problem-solving with the ability to work well both collaboratively and independently, and the ability to effectively manage expectations and competing priorities. Ideal candidates will have excellent technical, interpersonal, and communication skills, as well as a passion for the University’s mission of research, education, and outreach.

Job Responsibilities: 

  • NLP development
    • Lead and conduct NLP projects, design and develop NLP systems, and implement NLP algorithms
    • Determine system "rules," define datasets, develop and train models, analyze training and test data, and run evaluations
    • Develop and extend NLP libraries and frameworks
    • Conduct research and apply knowledge of existing and emerging NLP or other advanced analytics techniques to inform, recommend, and implement solutions to support a broad array of functions and business decisions
  • Advancement of services and approaches
    • Identify, research, develop, or propose NLP or other advanced analytics tools, approaches, processes, best practices, products, or frameworks to support and advance department’s initiatives to meet client business needs
    • Advance department’s collective knowledge, and provide NLP or advanced analytics consultation or guidance to HST colleagues
  • Other analytics, development, or ETL efforts
    • Depending on project needs, conduct programming, data mining, machine learning, predictive analytics, unstructured data processing, statistical analysis, or other development or analytics techniques, create data reports, visualizations, and dashboards, and/or identify, develop, test, and document accurate source-to-target database / ETL mapping logic in the development of data warehouses
  • Requirements, documentation, and other duties 
    • Research, understand, and apply appropriate governance and compliance requirements (e.g., FERPA, HIPAA) and digital accessibility best practices.
    • Meet with clients to elicit and understand requirements, translate business needs, processes, and definitions into technical solutions
    • Develop and maintain technical design, metadata, or business definition documentation
    • Provide input into work estimates, expectations, and project plans including priorities, deliverables, and timelines
    • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree and at least four years of experience, or master's degree plus at least two years of experience.
  • Experience with Natural Language Processing (NLP)
  • Understanding of data mining, advanced analytics (e.g., machine learning, predictive analytics), and statistical methods
  • Experience with programming languages (e.g., Python, PL/SQL, Ruby, R, Java)
  • Experience or familiarity with databases, SQL, or data analysis
  • Experience annotating documents to create gold standards and evaluation of models against those standards
  • Excellent customer service skills, strong organizational and analytical skills, and close attention to detail
  • Interest and ability to learn new technologies 


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Tableau
  • Experience with statistical design, analysis, and tool sets (e.g., SPSS, SAS, R, JMP)
  • Experience with data warehousing and manipulation/ETL (e.g., Oracle, MS SQL, MySQL)
  • Experience with version control (e.g., Git)
  • Understanding of data definitions and data governance
