Job Description

Business/Data Analyst Responsibilities:

  • Analyze large sets of data by looking at structures that don’t comply with SEC’s business rules.
  • Look at a business problem and identify the business rules that govern that problem.
  • Come up with approaches, potential solutions to detect violations of SEC's rules.
  • Document business requirements using business rules AND document data specifications based on the specific data to be used to detect the behavior.
  • Select filters and come up with correct conclusions based on what you are seeing.
  • Use complex SQL queries to mine data, to investigate and analyze vast sums of data to detect behavior patterns within the data.

  • Understand the business problem that the pattern is trying to detect or solve, AND be able to verbally explain it to any number of development and QC staff who do not have the same level of business understanding.

  • Understand at an in-depth level the specific data that is used to detect a behavior and why the behavior of interest will manifest itself in the data in a particular way. Be be able to explain this in great detail to the development and QC staff.
  • Be able to verbally translate various data conditions into business language for the business users to understand and present options to them.

Required Skills:

Solid reading comprehension skills, strong interest in and desire to understand  rules and regulations in securities industry (Stock market).

Excellent problem solving skills.

Attention to detail. Ability to write fully testable requirements.

Experience with data mining, quantitative and analytical skills on large amounts of data.

Some experience with algorithms (time series algorithms, basic statistics (standard deviations, averages, mean, etc.)

Familiarity with change, version control.

Experience working with risk scores and ability to explain how risk scores were determined.

Ability to write complex SQL queries without affecting performance. Left & right inner and outer joins, etc.

Ability to map data to the cloud (AWS).

Strong Data analysis skills – analyze data anomalies in the context of impact to patterns, and write a concise description of the problem and pattern impacts and report to the business.  

Excellent Verbal and written communication skills.

Very strong MS Word skills, including being able use styles effectively. Requirements are written in Word using a style-based template with table formatting.
