Certification Engineer and Manager for Hybrid eVTOL Project (Remote with Travel as needed)




A global automotive company is on a mission to explore new frontiers through innovation and having a profound impact on our world. You will expand sustainable energy and mobility solutions, working with a tightly knit team revolutionizing the industry. We are looking for a leader whose mindset is focused on the bigger picture from the certification point of view who could come in and layout the full, A-Z certification plan and approach for a complete aircraft type certification program. We are looking for Certification Engineer and Manager to be a part of this new hybrid eVTOL project.  You will help this innovative and multidisciplinary team succeed by supporting early engagement activities with the FAA and work with engineering to develop new aircraft operation concepts and safety strategies.


This position has long-term growth potential and is a unique opportunity to work with a globally known automotive company working on a hybrid eVTOL project from the beginning development stages. If you have multiple certification project experience from beginning to end, your consideration will be prioritized.



  • Acting as a Certification Manager:
    • Candidate is a self-starter able to develop a new department.
    • Establish communications with certification authorities (FAA, EASA, TCCA, ANAC, etc.) and be their point of contact for all official communications.
  • Develop the certification strategy and certification basis:
    • Coordinate and develop certification plans with the engineering team.
    • Develop regulatory gap analysis.
  • Come in and layout the whole certification plan and approach for a complete aircraft type certification project.
  • Monitor for newly published regulatory material, collecting, consolidating, and submitting comments to relevant industries committees (such as ASTM, GAMA, FAA, EASA, etc.), as well as providing notification within the engineering teams.
  • Prepare materials for white papers and presentations to support discussion with the FAA and EASA authorities to develop a pathway to certification for new concepts and technologies.
  • Work with engineering to develop the new aircraft operation concept and the safety strategy during normal and emergency operations.
  • Periodically report the status of the certification team to top management.
  • Lead efforts to achieve TC and PC ODA with the FAA.

Required Skillset:


  • Prior certification project experience is required from start to finish – multiple certification project completions are strongly preferred.
  • Certification experience for rotor craft or fixed wing, either experience will be applicable: helicopter, fixed wing, business jet, regional jet, etc.
  • Broad expertise or unique specialized knowledge in certification, including the completion of at least one previous certification program.
  • In-depth knowledge of FAA Orders 8110.4, 8100.15.
  • Understands the aircraft certification per FAR 23, 25, 27 and 29.
  • Understands the Fly-By-Wire aircraft certification.
  • Understands the requirement of operations specifications per FAR 91, FAR 121 and 135.
  • A combination of education and experience commensurate with becoming an expert in the field of aircraft systems engineering:
    • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, aviation or related field of study and 15 years of aviation work experience.
    • Master’s degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, aviation or related field of study and 12 years of aviation work experience.

Bonus Skillset:

  • Knowledge of ARP4761 and ARP4754.
  • Familiarity with other SE process tools such as JIRA, Confluence, Subversion, etc.
  • Knowledge of DO-160, DO-178C, and DO-254.
  • FAA-certified airplane pilot license.
  • FAA-certified rotorcraft pilot license.
  • Unmanned UAV control certification/skill.
  • Worked on various types of Aircraft certification programs preferred

Location: Remote with travel to San Luis Obispo, CA as needed (Relocation assistance available for those outside immediate area who would like to be considered as a fulltime employee rather than contract.)
