The Data Architect will work as part of the Enterprise Architecture team supporting the design, development, implementation, and use of the overall company. The data architecture team works with government staff toward better data and information architecture, data strategy, data governance, federation of architectures, information technology solutions, and assessing impact of potential changes on the organization and its stakeholders.
The Data Architect must have demonstrated experience with designing, creating, deploying, and maintaining an organization's data architecture. Specific areas of work are:
design and maintenance of a metadata repository database that supports storage of enterprise architecture data;
development, maintenance, and publication of the data architecture portion of the enterprise architecture from a metadata repository;
support for the development and delivery of a metadata strategy and solution to help guide data management efforts within the enterprise,
data mapping efforts to create relationships between the enterprise data architecture tiers and the operational data stores of the organization;
data mapping efforts to create relationships between enterprise data architecture objects and other enterprise, segment, and solution architecture objects (e.g. business processes, performance measures, security standards, etc.) as well as appropriate Federal Enterprise Architecture (FEA) reference model content;
creation of visual artifacts, diagrams of models for publication or presentations, data dictionaries, and data mapping results that convey the business value of the enterprise architecture; and
Creation or maintenance of content for data architecture web pages.
Developing conceptual and logical data models in support of various functional areas
Using standard conventions for data definition and naming.
Knowledge of data modeling techniques such as IE, IDEF1X, and UML.
Using automated tools to develop conceptual and logical data models (e.g., IBM Rational System Architect*, IBM Rational Software Architect, Erwin). IBM Rational System Architect and InQuisient Enterprise Elements are the current tools of choice.
Analyzing database designs and reverse-engineering physical schemas from databases.
SQL and relational theory.
Modeling data designs that facilitate business and system interoperability using authoritative data sources.
Data interoperability standards such as XML technologies, EDI, ontologies, and semantics.
Use of Microsoft desktop software: Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access.
Working in a fast paced environment with minimal supervision.
Basic Hiring Criteria:
A Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Information Technology (IT) Management, and 10+ years of data architecture and data modeling experience in at least two business domains.
Experience with performing systems analysis tasks in support of data modeling efforts
Experience contributing to executive level presentations that clearly and concisely document results of analyses and modeling efforts
Experience with VA, DoD, or other Federal strategic planning and enterprise architecture environments, processes, and personnel OR broad knowledge and experience with both commercial and governmental, enterprise-level, strategic planning approaches.
Experience in organizational dynamics, change management, project management, or business transformation efforts.
Strong business and technical writing skills; specifically, experience in development and composition of strategic plans, client presentations, and related deliverables.
