Basic Purpose

To support the Information Services Department and the enterprise by making recommendations regarding the modernization of Navy Federal's data architecture, in support of business vision and strategies. The Data Architect focuses on modern data architecture and design patterns including multi-cloud data positioning, to support operational practices, on-and-off-premise analytics, business intelligence, and reporting.


• Align/drive Navy Federal's architectural strategies with Navy Federal business and ISD strategic goals
• Anticipate internal and/or external business challenges including regulatory; recommend process, product or service enhancements
• Build and maintain relationships with team members, management, key stakeholders and/or external contacts (vendors, etc.)
• Collaborate on reviews to assess the integrity and quality of proposed technical solutions
• Develop and apply architectural governance based on business and information technology strategies
• Develop architectural documentation and/or artifacts for use in technology projects, mentoring, internal training and product evaluation
• Develop technical solutions for business systems and functions that align with Navy Federal strategies
• Develop/apply architectural reference patterns that guide the selection, development, implementation and use of information technology within the enterprise
• Ensure architectural strategies are consistently and applied
• Plan, develop, review and enforce enterprise architectural standards
• Provide forward thinking technical expertise in current and emerging technologies, trends and practices
• Provide technical leadership in the architecture discipline and development of information technology solutions
• Lead, guide and mentor less experienced staff
• Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications - All required unless otherwise noted

• Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science or the equivalent combination of training, education, and experience
• Experience with data management solutions using data lake platform tools and technologies;
• Experience with data architecture, specifically in support of data warehousing, business intelligence, master data management, and reference data management;
• Familiarity with delivering Data as a Service (DaaS) concepts from enterprise repositories using REST APIs;
• Familiarity with developing data catalogues, and integrating with existing enterprise architecture;
• Familiarity with cloud data platforms and; process automation;
• Experience in using various data modeling techniques and their appropriate usage in data integration.
• Experience in working with all levels of staff, management, stakeholders, vendors
• Significant experience in performing analysis of business processes and functions
• Significant experience in work as an engineer or technical subject matter expert in two or more of the following areas: infrastructure; data; application; and/or security related technology
• Advanced analytical and conceptual skills to create original concepts/theories for various projects
• Advanced skill troubleshooting and resolving technical problems
• Effective database and presentation software skills
• Effective skill applying innovative approaches to solve technical design issues
• Effective skill creating system diagrams for review by both technical and non-technical audiences
• Effective skill identifying patterns of software quality and reusability
• Effective skill influencing and guiding strategic thinking
• Effective skill in results-oriented leadership in a challenging environment
• Effective skill translating business goals and objectives into IT capabilities
• Effective verbal and written communication skills

Desired Qualifications:

• Familiarity with Cloudera Data Platform governance and data pipeline management;
• Familiarity with Essbase and Oracle on-prem and cloud data management and analytic tools;
• Familiarity with Azure-based data and data management tools, such as Azure SQL and Azure Data Catalog;
• Familiarity with data integration points for TOGAF (or other recognized architecture framework); or
• Familiarity with Mainframe data storage related to VSAM and copybook structure.
• Experience in researching, compiling, and documenting data, business processes, and workflow
• Familiarity with banking/financial industry standards and practices
• Working knowledge of development or operations framework methodologies, including Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL), Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC), etc.
• Working knowledge of The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF) v9 and the Zachman Framework
• Working knowledge of Navy Federal's functions, philosophy, operations and organizational objectives

Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm

Location: 820 Follin Lane, Vienna, VA 22180 or Remote

Colorado resident salary range: $96,200 - $138,900

*Due to COVID-19 and social distancing, this position will be temporarily working from home with plans to return to campus at the desired location listed once Navy Federal is back to normal operations. The specific logistics for returning to campus will be determined at a future date by individual leadership*
