Position Overview: 

The Data Engineer’s role is to build up data architecture and models and develop data pipelines in support of the company’s Business Intelligence vision.  The individual will be responsible for designing and optimizing ELT routines and modern data warehouse schema.  The Data Engineer will also work closely with business partners and data stewards to ensure business relevance and data governance.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Support the strategic BI initiatives by implementing new warehousing, ELT, and governance practices.
  • Migrate, improve, and build new data models for the data warehouse.
  • Develop ELT pipelines from a wide variety of data sources.
  • Partner with analytics and business reps to understand data needs and identify new opportunities for valuable data delivery.
  • Support data governance teams and data catalog info such as terminology, categories, metrics, business rules, filters, metadata, etc.
  • Work with technology partners including Infrastructure, Applications, and Analytics teams to assist with data-related technical issues and support their data needs.
  • Identify data discrepancies and data quality issues, and work with data stewards and quality engineers to ensure data consistency and integrity through proper data lineage tracking and governance projects.
  • Execute data warehouse configuration and performance tuning; diagnose and resolve data warehouse access and performance issues.
  • Monitor system performance including stored procedures and execution time, and implement efficiency improvements.
  • Support agile SDLC process, including changing control and testing processes for modifications to data systems.
  • Develop documentation for data architecture, models, and environment in order to maintain a current and accurate view of the larger data picture.
  • Develop and deploy end-user practices and tools for data extraction, queries, and data manipulation in accordance with business processes.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • College diploma or university degree in the field of computer science, information systems, or related field and/or 3+ years equivalent work experience.
  • Experience or exposure to the following technologies:
    • database platforms, such as Snowflake and/or SQL Server.
    • ETL tools, Talend or comparable
    • SQL and Java programming
    • cloud providers such as AWS
  • Knowledge or interest in the following methodologies:
    • data architecting, data modeling (star schema, etc.)
    • interest in Data Vault 2.0 practices
    • business requirements gathering/analysis
    • data warehouse development and support
    • relational database structures, theories, principles, and practices
    • technical support documentation
  • General skills:
    • analytical, conceptual, and problem-solving abilities.
    • written and oral communication
    • inquisitive and able to research best practices, technologies, and standards
    • self-starter, able to prioritize and execute tasks
    • collaborate in an agile, team-oriented environment
