Job Description

Grapevine Technology is an Information Technology recruiting firm focused on quality candidate placement with high profile client companies.  Our client in Stamford, CT is looking for a strong Desktop Engineer to join their permanent employee staff.  This is a M-F, 9-5 position.


The Desktop Engineer is responsible for the overall design, implementation, operation, and support of the enterprise-wide desktop services.  Duties include the administration of desktop hardware, software applications, and printer services; the management and coordination of moves, adds, and changes (MACs); the management and coordination of break/fix services for desktop, laptop, mobile devices, PDA, and printers; the design and development of software distribution application packages and scripts; the maintenance and advancement of desktop management services, including remote control, software distribution, asset management, and virus protection services; and the establishment of a standards-based desktop hardware architecture and application portfolio.




  1. Ongoing maintenance and advancement of the desktop services architecture and hardware environment through effective engineering and implementation of solutions which support the user and application needs of the organization.  In this capacity, the Desktop Engineer is responsible for the planning, design, implementation, and ongoing operational support efforts of the desktop application portfolio, computer hardware, desktop management tools, MACs, Break / Fix, asset management and virus protection services


  1. Application package scripting and general programming knowledge specializing in command line scripting and VB.  Java, XML and C Sharp a plus. Experience in MSI editing.  In depth knowledge of windows OS  including the registry   


  1. Use McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO) to maintain machine health in the environment ensuring DAT's are up to date.  Monitor threats and escalate to the security administrator if there are an elevated number of threats.  Create and edit policies and scheduled tasks.  Manage policies through ePO group administration. Create server tasks to assist with administration.


  1. Using Citrix Presentation server (CPS) create/update virtual images for various user groups throughout the environment.  Create and manage CPS groups to deploy images. Routine maintenance tasks to the CPS environment.


  1. Assist with the Planning, Design, and migration efforts to go from Windows XP to Windows 7 with a strategic utilization of Active Directory Services and Microsoft Group Policy.  This includes the development of an Active Directory Services strategy to support standard-based directory services, a single sign-on solution, comprehensive security and virus protection capabilities, and a robust messaging infrastructure.


  1. Administer and maintain an HP desktop, laptop and thin client environment to support application processing requirements.  This includes the planning and implementation of an annual desktop refresh program, image management and application standardization and scripting.


  1. Assume responsibility for operational support, MACs, and break / fix issues as triaged by the helpdesk.  The desktop engineer will be responsible for maintaining and advancing the Altiris desktop management solution which includes asset management, PC Anywhere desktop remote control, software distribution, hardware independent imaging and monthly patching.


  1. Assume responsibility for desktop related project efforts by coordinating with IS and other departments as necessary to ensure proper communication and execution.  This includes design and architecture definition as appropriate, project planning, change management coordination, vendor integration and coordination, user / department communication / notification, etc.


  1.  Assume responsibility for monitoring the Data Center.  This includes proper troubleshooting and escalation to the BackOffice and Operations teams as required.


QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:  Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred, with at least 5 years experience in desktop services architecture and administration.  Strong, demonstrable experience in Microsoft Windows 7, Active Directory Services, MS Office suite, McAfee virus protection,  and HP desktop / laptop / thin client.  Microsoft certification is preferred.


-          Expertise in asset management, desktop and server management systems, functions and operations.

-          Experience in end-user device technologies, application integration and associated workstation services, operating systems, and utilities related to desktop services

-          Expertise in electronic mail, groupware and collaborative technologies

-          Expertise in network operating system (NOS) and office automation administration functions, operations and security requirements.

-          Experience in installation and maintenance of operating system software and related products necessary to coordinate and administer desktop services.

-          Expertise in domain and directory services planning, design and implementations.

-          Expertise in desktop deployment and annual refresh strategies and process.

-          Expertise in desktop monitoring, utilization, capacity planning, and management systems, and the application of this knowledge to support the budget process and customer service.

-          Expertise in network print, file and directory services.

-          Experience in back office and desktop troubleshooting and problem diagnosis.

-          Experience in virus protection technology and process to ensure data integrity.

-          Knowledge in installation and maintenance of HP / Compaq hardware and related products.

-          Experienced with vendors of services and products relevant to back office and desktop environments.

-          Knowledge of Windows 7 operating system troubleshooting and problem diagnosis.

-          Effective documentation skills are essential.
