This is an agency-wide position, which is comprised of several geographically separated divisions with a nationwide force: Infrastructure Security Division, Cybersecurity Division, Emergency Communications Division, National Risk Management Center and several organizational units. In this position, you will serve as an IT Cybersecurity Specialist. Typical work assignments include:
  • Reviewing proposed new systems, networks, and software designs for potential security risks.
  • Applying IT systems security principles and methods in order to recommend appropriate technical strategies to resolve complex and persistent IT security challenges.
  • Providing assessments of proposed design measures' feasibility, based on broad knowledge of parameters imposed by the IT infrastructure and operations.
  • Conducting system security evaluations to ensure implementation of appropriate systems security policies.

Occasional travel - You may be expected to travel 1-5 nights for this position.

This is an open continuous announcement for 365 days, or until all positions are filled. It will be used to fill immediate and future vacancies for this agency. There may be multiple cut-off dates with the first being 30 days after the initial opening date of 01/14/2020. Additional cut-off dates may be established as needed until all vacancies have been filled.

You qualify for the GS-13 grade level (starting salary $91,231.00) if you possess information technology related experience demonstrating each of the four required competencies:
  • Attention to Detail: review new systems or networks to implement appropriate security measures
  • Customer Service: work closely with customers to evaluate and provide insight on system requirements
  • Oral Communication: communicate with senior leadership on cybersecurity initiatives and potential issues
  • Problem Solving: identify and resolve infrastructure cybersecurity vulnerabilities
  • In addition to the above requirement you must have at least one year of specialized experience at the GS-12 grade level performing the following duties:
    • Providing technical support to enterprise-wide cyber defense technicians to resolve cyber incidents
    • Performing real-time cyber defense incident handling tasks to support deploy-able Incident Response Teams (IRTs)
    • Documenting incidents that may cause ongoing and immediate impact to the environment
    • Assisting in the development of long-range plans for IT security systems that anticipate, identify, evaluate, and minimize risks associated with IT system vulnerabilities

    National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    Current or Former Political Appointees: The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees.
