Job Description

Location: Chesterbrook, PA

Description: Our client is currently seeking a Linux Systems Engineer
1+ Year Contract (can extend up to 3 years)
Wayne, PA

Looking for someone with Linux template creation/management expertise. Candidates must be experts in VMware and Linux. They will need to be able to build RHEL templates, understand Linux kixtart, apply baseline configurations, partner with various teams to test stack software (agents, middleware, etc.), understand config management software and how it plays into template management, advanced shell scripting (ksh/bash), and PowerShell knowledge a must.


1.Provides senior-level Tier 3 technical infrastructure support services for issues elevated from the Support Center and other Technical Services groups. Ensures reliable operation of production. Diagnoses and troubleshoots availability interruptions and other production issues.

2.Provide systems administration functions for Linux environment, including project planning, systems design and engineering, performance management, security auditing, and capacity planning

3.Analyze availability, access (user accounts and permissions), and performance issues as found during monitoring or as reported by customers.

4.Implement and maintain high availability, scalable and cost-effective infrastructure involved in the support of mission critical operations. Knowledge and experience in the resource management and capacity planning in the areas of virtualization, Storage, networking and server capacity.

5.Build automation into daily processes, including server builds, patching, and configuration analysis.

6.Participate in global and regional initiatives and self-checks such as security audits, change management, incident management, asset management, run and operations tasks.

7.Plans and coordinates enterprise-wide infrastructure projects with other IT and client teams. Communicates with teams to keep them apprised of status and issues. Contacts vendors to resolve technical issues.

8.Tests, installs, and migrates software, patches, upgrades, applications, and/or hardware.

9.Develops technical standards. Tests and evaluates IT vendor products.

10.Writes documentation, including project plans, installation procedures, and troubleshooting tips. Creates diagrams, including technical topology.

11.Maintains, monitors, and tunes Production system and applications performance. Debugs source code and performance problems and/or provides debugging assistance to developers. Identifies opportunities to improve system and applications performance (e.g., automating manual system tasks).

12.Trains and mentors' staff. Resolves complex issues elevated from staff with less experience.

13.Adds, updates, and closes IT Problem Management database records. Researches and resolves complex issues and reviews related technology records to mitigate impact on assigned system.

14.Reviews numerous IT knowledge repositories to update technical knowledge. Learns and understands client area business functions and requirements. Has the ability to determine the appropriate technical tool to address the client's business needs.

15.Thoroughly understands and complies with IT policies and procedures, especially those for quality and productivity standards that enable the team to meet established client service levels. Thoroughly understands and complies with Information Security policies and procedures, and verifies deliverables meet Information Security and VSA requirements.

16.Participates in special projects and performs other duties as assigned.


Building RHEL templates on VMware infrastructure, and coordinating/tracking the testing of the various components and template dependencies.

Managing infrastructure incidents to resolution within the required OLA. Processing infrastructure requests for service within the SLA.

Establishes and ensures standards compliance, Corporate security, policy/procedures exploring the use of new technologies to improve the service the team offers.

Evaluates the organization's existing infrastructure technology and researches and analyzes trends.

Develops detailed project plans and tracks project progress.

Implements changes to the infrastructure technology that enhance its reliability and efficiency.

Some nights and weekend work may be required based upon business needs.


10+ years of experience with RHEL 5+

3+ years of experience with RHEL 7

Strong Linux template management on VMware

Strong shell scripting knowledge (ksh/bash)

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Strong written and oral communication skills.

Knowledge of the following product support practices and concepts:

Linux system build design and administration

Scripting languages (e.g. perl, python, powershell, etc)

DR strategies are a plus

Full project delivery life cycle

IT service level agreements

Performance monitoring, tuning, and debugging (e.g., GTF traces, and region and transaction dumps)

Software and peripheral installation

Network protocols (e.g., TCP/IP and ACCP)

Process/product testing and verification

Knowledge of one or more IT platforms or products:

  • RHEL7+
  • Puppet
  • HP / Cisco UCS Hardware experience
  • VMWare/vSphere
