Manager, Technology – QA Lead

Managers of Technology in QA are senior software test engineers with leadership ability.

Managers of Technology with specialization in Quality Assurance (QA) are senior systems engineers and QA Team Leads with upwards of five (5) or more years of hands-on experience in QA. QA software engineers or testers will create detailed test plans, test scripts, unit tests, load tests, custom scripts, automation, and lead support for comprehensive application and systems regression testing. They must be familiar enough with the underlying hardware as well as the operating system so that their strategies for testing work well with pre-existing systems as well as new work in development. They may develop new concepts for testing products that have yet to be released on the market. The Manager works closely with the QA Team as the senior-most tester in the QA Center of Excellence and as a problem solver and outstanding communicator.


The Manager, Technology leads the testing team to validate web-based software applications, xml-based software services, application middleware, and relational databases. These professionals often interface with experienced software engineers, analysts, and support team supervisors to provide deep level validation for different features of an assembly of software applications including speed, performance, failover, failback, memory leakage, dead-lock scenarios, referential integrity, and shear strength. Other duties include validating whether or not support desk issues and software related bugs are reproducible, managing the time and allocation of their own QA resources, and generating comprehensive test plans for new development work.

QA engineers typically possess a bachelor’s degree in software engineering or computer science. Engineers with specializations in other streams but additional certification from computer-training institutes, good programming skills, and experience with computer systems, information architectures and web technologies are also considered by employers. Many large companies train new employees about in-house technology and procedures. Employers of Associates of Technology in QA testing show a strong preference for individuals with professional credentials, including Certified Software Tester.


The Manager, Technology QA Lead is responsible for the day-to-day operations and successful delivery of professional quality software testing services from the QA Center of Excellence (COE). The Manager’s duty is to continuously improve the quality of SCI’s products through innovative testing strategy, adherence to company policy, and best practices in the field of QA. The Manager is expected to be hands-on as well as providing oversight, guidance, and mentoring to those on their QA team. The Manager will be experienced with programming and scripting, databases, and customized ways of testing software systems. The Manager is the specific resource responsible for creating detailed test plans for each new major project produced by SCI’s Gold Development team, and will work closely in conjunction with SCI’s Gold, Silver, and Iridium Development teams, as well as SCI’s support desk.

Reporting Structure:

The Manager of Technology, QA Lead reports directly to the Chief Information Officer (CIO).


Upon joining the SCI team, the Manager of Technology will jump right in and begin to tackle the following challenges:

  • Understanding every screen and popup within the entire SCI Web Site, as well as gain a thorough understanding of the architecture, database, and 3rd party connections responsible for driving the entire system.
  • Understanding the XML-based web service, how it works, and how to test it using the SOAP UI tools.
  • Understand SCI’s “Smash-Lab™” load testing service and further its development and utilization as a tool for load testing SCI’s web-based products.
  • Understand SCI’s utilization of Stored Procedures and timed Batch Jobs (background tasks) so that scripts can be written and calibrated to test their efficiency.
  • Understand Zabbix and SCI’s current suite of monitoring tools then embellish and refine them and restructure monitoring so as to realize continuous and broad improvements for SCI.
  • Identify new and previously undiscovered areas which could be candidates for automation and automated testing.
  • Understand, adopt, and then enforce all SCI IT department policies such as timeliness, daily meetings, and testing standards.
  • Engage in a continued learning track by picking a testing certification and aggressively pursuing it through completion.
  • Generate templates for comprehensive test plans
  • Integrate into SCI’s Core LOE Estimating process with perspective and metrics for QA
  • Work with their team to constantly improve quality and deliver professional-grade QAT.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Education and/or related training or experience equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in Computer Science, Information Systems, Computer Engineering or a related field.
  • 5+ years direct software quality assurance experience in testing Enterprise Java (JEE) based web applications in both the Unix and Windows environments
  • 5+ years hands-on experience with automated test tools
  • Supervisory-level experience leading other QA team members
  • Understanding of JSON and RestFul Web Services, JavaScript, Ajax, CSS, HTML, XML, XSLT
  • Demonstrable grasp on SQL fundamentals and working directly with relational databases
  • Practical knowledge of how to analyze system requirements and develop test artifacts
  • Experience with workflow management and or helpdesk ticketing system
  • Strong written skills to write and streamline test cases
  • Understanding and the ability to articulate Black box testing as well as White box testing
  • Proficient with cross-browser nuances and strategy for efficiently testing across a variety of platforms
  • Working experience with SCRUM and iterative software development methodologies
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to communicate with engineers, users, and vendors
  • A self-starter in a fast-paced environment
