We are seeking a Puppet / Linux / Site Reliability / DevOps engineer with strong enterprise Linux expertise and Puppet programming skills. The ideal candidate is familiar with the design, implementation and best practices for managing a large number of enterprise Linux systems using Puppet/SIMP in an environment that prioritizes security. The ideal candidate excels at disciplined and well tested Puppet programming, continuously improves the Puppet code base, has eagerness for continuous learning and improvement of Puppet programming and Linux administration skills, enjoys pair programming, and can approve and comment on Puppet code pull requests. The ideal candidate has good written and oral communication skills and enjoys and excels at documenting and training other staff to improve their Puppet operations and troubleshooting skills. The ideal candidate can serve as a friendly and humble Puppet evangelist while still meeting people "where they are" in their journey and guiding them. You'll be working with other corporate IT teams as well as Aerospace engineers to develop and maintain scientific and engineering workloads on-premise and in AWS in support of mission success of critical national space assets.

Key Functions

  • Enterprise Linux expertise and troubleshooting
  • Administer Puppet for automated Linux system and configuration management
  • Develop, improve, and maintain Puppet code and Hiera configuration
  • Security hardening, compliance, and automation



  • Typically five years experience
  • BS degree in Computer Science/Engineering/IT or equivalent experience
  • Experience in supporting an enterprise Linux environment including configuring and managing access to NFS file system shares and Active Directory integration with RHEL/CentOS
  • Minimum one year experience in Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) or CentOS Linux system administration, including configuration, troubleshooting, and security hardening in enterprise environments
  • Familiarity with Ubuntu/Debian Linux
  • Strong programming skills implementing infrastructure-as-code (for example: Puppet, Ruby, Bash, TerraForm, AWS CloudFormation, Python, Ansible, Chef, AWK, Perl)
  • Minimum one year experience with Puppet for automated Linux system management and configuration in a large scale enterprise environment
  • .....Experience with Puppet client deployment, management, testing, troubleshooting
  • .....Knowledge of the parts of the Puppet Control-Repo:
  • ..........Puppetfile management (module implementation, sourcing and versioning)
  • ..........Module familiarity and maintenance: (Puppet Forge, custom modules)
  • ..........Hiera concepts: (search order, parameters defined by facts)
  • ..........Site/site-module structure, roles, profiles
  • .....Knowledge of best organizational practices of grouping and classifying nodes
  • .....Understanding of working with Git repositories and the Puppet GitOps workflow
  • ..........Branch management (deployment environment model)
  • ..........Forking workflow
  • ..........Permission management (user access, ssh keys, module groups)

  • Willingness and ability to obtain US government secret security clearance and work in classified on premise environments in El Segundo, CA or Chantilly, VA for at least 50% time


  • Certification: Puppet Professional Certification, Red Hat Certified Engineer
  • Five years experience managing Puppet environments and developing Puppet code
  • .....Experience with Puppet server setup, and with file sync concepts (Code Manager)
  • .....Experience with Puppet Bolt, Puppet Community Edition, GitLab Community, GitLab CI/CD
  • .....Experience writing custom Puppet facts: (external, Ruby implemented)
  • .....Experience with SIMP including setup and deployment, and customizing SIMP Puppet Hiera security enforcement settings
  • US government secret security clearance
  • Experience with Kubernetes and Docker
  • Experience with AWS
  • Experience with automated provisioning tools (for example: TerraForm, Stacki, Cobbler, Kickstart)
  • Experience with Agile and Scrum
