Overview of Information Technology


Information Technology (IT) at Pew takes a proactive approach toward the use of technology to increase the organization's capacity for exceptionally high-quality strategic philanthropy. Executive leadership at Pew recognizes the importance of technology, and supports related initiatives to advance the institution's goals and achieve and maintain a leadership position in the philanthropic community. The department comprises highly competent, forward-thinking professionals who are responsible for the technology needs of all Pew staff, as well as for Pew's subsidiaries in Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. IT is organized into distinct areas of responsibility, including strategic alignment of technology with the business, the evaluation and acquisition of software and hardware, implementation new systems and data repositories, and providing support for the extended network, desktop computer hardware, and software applications.



Position Overview


The Senior Associate, Network Engineer is a mid-level technical resource responsible for building, maintaining and improving Pew's wide and local area network infrastructure, and communications systems, including its Cisco unified communications system. The position is part of the Infrastructure Operations group which manages all on-premise, hosted or cloud infrastructure. The Senior Associate position requires solid knowledge in specialized technologies, such as network routing and switching protocols, firewall and load balancing, communication circuits, VPN, wireless and network security technologies.



The Senior Associate, Network Engineer has no direct management responsibility. He or she will work with other senior network and unified communications staff to assist with complex projects with computer network components and work with other network and systems staff, and with outside entities such as contracted firms. The Senior Associate is part of a team of engineering professionals and is expected to contribute individually and as part of the team. The Senior Associate reports to the Senior Manager, Infrastructure Operations.






o Provide tier 2 support for network, communications circuits, telephony, and security issues.


o Troubleshoot wireless and wired security.


o Administer network devices (routing, switching, load balancing, VPN, and firewalls) for wired and wireless networks in a multi-office, global setting.


o Assist senior network engineers with project implementation.


o Maintain network monitoring software and device backups.


o Maintain CUCM monitoring software and device backups.


o Provide reporting for CUCM.


o Perform monitoring, including reporting anomalies or status quo.


o Participate in audits and support periodic penetration tests.


o Participate in planning, risk assessment, and documentation following procedures, best practices, and ensuring network availability.


o Work with vendors and other staff to perform regular maintenance.


o Work with outside expert-level network, voice, and data contracting firms to complete complex projects.


o Maintain inventory documents and software; update drawings and use tools like SolarWinds, and NetBrain.


o Assist in managing customer facing and internal knowledgebase articles on network and phone system troubleshooting and provisioning.


o Assist remote office staff with network and unified communications issues, occasionally visiting remote offices.


o Work under general supervision from the senior manager, and senior peers.


o Exercise independent judgement


o Other duties as assigned.






o Bachelor's degree.


o A minimum of four years of relevant and specialized network administration experience demonstrating technical experience in an enterprise environment.


o Demonstrable knowledge of the OSI model, network protocols and troubleshooting procedures.


o Some knowledge of ISP and WAN connection technologies.


o Moderate experience with network infrastructure including wired and wireless networks, protocols, routing and switching, and associated network devices.


o Experience with on premise network infrastructure, wireless and wired networks and protocols.


o General understanding of systems, including Microsoft networking (replication, trusts, GPOs, etc.); hypervisors (VMware), Citrix (and NetScaler), and storage.


o Experience with infrastructure monitoring (Netflow; network configuration management; performance monitoring and dashboards).


o Understanding of DNS, domain registrations and SSL Certificates.


o Some familiarity with items related to datacenter management (power, UPS management; cooling, rack layout and cable management, etc.).


o Some experience with documenting designs and policies associated with network infrastructure.


o Experience with Visio or other visual process mapping software.


o Ability to consult with senior peers and vendors.


o Exercise latitude for independent judgement.


o Ability to coordinate multiple tasks simultaneously.


o As directed by more senior staff, conduct research and may interpret and summarize results for leadership.


o Ability to lift 25 pounds.


o Strong trouble-shooting skills.


o Strong communication skills.


o Strong interpersonal skills.





o CompTIA Network+, Cisco, Microsoft, or security certifications.


o Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CallManager) experience.


o Exposure to cloud and hosted applications.


o Experience with voice protocols and gateways (e.g. SIP, PRI.)





Occasional travel required between Pew's main Philadelphia and Washington, DC offices, and the possibility of travel to smaller remote offices in the US and abroad. Minimal additional travel required to attend trainings, seminars or conferences.
