Job Description


The Senior Analytics Developer is an experienced team member, who works under limited supervision, providing advanced support for analytics and report development. This includes, but is not limited to, gathering business requirements, design, data mapping, development of reporting tool data models and complex reports, unit testing, assisting business partners with user acceptance testing, training end-users, and providing end-user production support. Interaction and communication across multiple International Operations IT teams and business partners is required while working on various projects and support requests.


Job Duties:

  • Analyze business user needs, document requirements, design and develop new or modify models (Cognos Analytics Framework Manager or Data Modules) and/or reports, events, scheduled jobs as necessary
  • Provide production support including changes and break/fix for standard and ad-hoc reporting using Cognos Analytics
  • Collaborate with Project Management Office, Business System Analysts, data integration teams (ETL, Data Architect), source system teams, and business partners for various projects and support requests
  • Communicate with management, team members and business partners on work status and/or issues in a timely manner
  • Provide direction to and mentor entry-level team members
  • Provide direction to offshore development team members on work assignments
  • Continually refine, enhance, and automate processes and reports using available BI tools and functionality
  • Provide and seek training and mentoring from peers for cross-functional growth, learning and career development
  • Must be able to perform data mapping from data source to report, develop and troubleshoot SQL code, and maintain deep understanding of data and information resources
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Conform with all company policies and procedures



  • Must have a strong understanding of enterprise data integration and data architecture
  • Knowledge of relational database structures, start schema structures, models, and diagrams
  • Deep understanding of SQL Server and Oracle database technology and design concepts
  • Highly skilled in report, event, and scheduled job development as well as data analytics and data visualization using Cognos Analytics v11.x
  • Highly skilled in Cognos Framework Manager design, development, and maintenance using IBM recommended best practices
  • Desired experience in Cognos Analytics v11.x Data Modules, Dashboards, Upload Files, and Storytelling
  • Advanced computer skills including, but not limited to SQL code, MS Excel, Cognos, SharePoint, MS PowerPoint, and ServiceNow
  • Strong understanding of the SDLC process and project management steps used in delivering IT solutions
  • Experience with translating business requirements into system functional and non-functional requirements
  • Knowledge of GM Financial's core business functions
  • Working knowledge of information technology systems, infrastructure and operations
  • Knowledge of security methodologies, policies, standards and best practices including in-depth knowledge of row-level security application in Cognos Framework Manager
  • Knowledgeable of best practices in information technology governance and regulatory landscape for financial institutions
  • Significant experience in a large and complex business environment


  • Ability to provide prompt, high-quality customer service to members, staff, vendors, and internal/external customers

  • Cognos Analytics skills including author reports, author reports with multidimensional data, dashboards and Event Studio
  • Ability to write medium to complex SQL queries
  • Strong in the use of Microsoft Office software including strong ability to analyze data using Excel for reporting and data mining purposes
  • Strong organizational, time management and project management skills; ability to formulate action plans and timelines and execute plans
  • Ability to thoroughly research issues in a timely manner, identify and suggest solutions, and proactively implement corrective steps
  • Ability to manage multiple reporting projects and non-reporting tasks while being able to effectively perform necessary communications and coordination with management, end-users, business partners and the IT community
  • Self-motivated, with the ability to lead and manage multiple projects and deadlines, with minimal supervision
  • Capable of working both independently and as a contributing team member, to meet team and department goals
  • Strong people skills including the ability to interact with employees at all levels
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Must be able to apply knowledge and critical thinking in analysis, judgment, logic, and communication methods when solving problems and making decisions
  • Must take initiative to explore best practices, keep up-to-date with technology changes & training related to reporting and analytics
  • Ability to understand GM Financial's business
  • At all times, maintain confidentiality and protect the privacy of information


Bachelor's Degree - Required in related field or equivalent work experience

Work Experience:

  • 5-7 years Required
  • Required - experience with Cognos Analytics v11.x
  • Required - Experience working multiple projects and providing support

Working Conditions:

  • Normal office environment subject to stressful situations
  • Limited travel may be required to support business needs
  • Possibility of working long hours including weekends/holidays, occasional overtime may be required
