Web Developer Notes
Team is composed of web developers, designers, and video producers. This job title is a legacy name for truly a front end developer role. Web producer sometimes is the hardest part of the job description but it’s more of a front end developer role. Role is responsible for developing and maintaining and all of our internal and external websites, campaigns, blogs, various platforms.
Low touch editing of HTML will be required, although it can range in terms of full spectrum, content editing all the way to custom coding to responsive fluid website outside of CMS.
Functions of this role will include getting things in the CMS, creating dynamic emails and landing pages for marketing campaigns for various content, content authoring in the sense of a CMS or page outside CMS and editing content. Simple content edit such as maintenance requests to in depth custom coding.
Some of the other things we need is currently is that we follow a waterfall process, NOT agile (unlike other teams at Delta). We support a wide range of quick turnaround ad hoc requests in addition to more planned and advanced projects. Someone coming into the role needs to be flexible and positive, accommodating, can troubleshoot and change gears quickly. Must feel comfortable coming up to speed and embracing discovery process throughout implementations as needed. Need to be technically minded, a quick study and needs to develop in a variety of systems. We work on liferay, Drupal, wordpress, sharepoint, adobe campaign as marketing automation system. Native apache environment, git, subversion.
Candidate needs to have a good understanding of event tracking, page tagging, understanding of google analytics for QA purposes to review their own work, they will make sure they’ve implemented the tagging correctly by looking at google analytics and seeing activity on their page.
Other items: comfort with T3, scalable vector graphics, retina display of images, on high density devices there will be clarity on images put up on website. One of the most important things is that all of the work due to SLA and performance guarantees really must conform with W3 Sigma standards and WCAD 2.0. Progressive enhancement applied. General proficiency in photoshop and/or sketchà more used/applied if they are provided a given design. The developer should be comfortable going in, reconfiguring for optimization in the code. Product manager/project manager take the bulk of the interfacing with business units, but developer from time to time does interface with clients. When technical requirements are flushed out, need to be able to articulate limitations of different systems and be able to confirm or negate whether they can meet the requirement of the business requestor.
PHP has been used heavily, but ultimately we are likely to move to AEM for our CMS. Front-end needs to integrate with back-end applications, i.e.:
Need to have good design sensibilities, but this is a coding role. When developer implements design, having an attention to detail and matching the design to what the client has approved is vital. They should not be expecting to be the designer of the things they are producing, though they will have the opportunity to critique and provide input.
Most of team came in knowing 1-2 of the platforms, the level of complexity we support, doesn’t usually require in depth knowledge, rather we are for the most part working with an app development team when themes have to be created. But, it is important person comes with really solid HTML/CSS/Java skills so they can code from scratch.
5 years is adequate, having more experience is nice.
Finance and healthcare background is a plus, technical ability trumps all.
