We are seeking a Senior Java Software Developer with strong skills and hands-on experience in a DevOps environment to support a national level, public facing web site that has over 5 million users. Your contributions and leadership will be vital to providing a high quality user experience to our web site customers. You will utilize your highly proficient Java/J2EE skills to incorporate new technologies into the application platform. Your contributions and leadership will be vital to providing a high quality user experience to our web site customers. In your role as the Senior Java Software Developer, you will work within agile teams to develop customer-centric applications that support Veterans and their families in receiving benefits and services. You will perform complex analysis, design, development, testing, and debugging of computer software ranging from operating system architecture integration and software design to selection of computer systems, language, and/or equipment. Your activities will include designing, coding, and testing of systems using test driven development techniques and improving overall performance of any application or module under examination.This is a challenging job that requires a top performer who is able to keep on point, communicate quickly and clearly with a large stakeholder group, and provide an organized and calm response to issues and problems. You will be required to be a quick learner who can readily adapt to new technologies and rapidly changing requirements.

Responsibilities:




As the Senior Java Software Developer, you will:
  • Design and build solutions consistent with enterprise architecture reference standards;
  • Work closely with the technical and leadership teams to actively identify and log technical issues or risks associated with a project, escalating them, as appropriate, and possibly implementing mitigation strategies for risk prevention and timely resolution;
  • Manage a team of developers who are responsible for multiple, complex, cross-functional projects by providing training, mentoring/coaching, setting priorities/direction, monitoring quality, and managing performance.

Qualifications:




Required:
  • Must be Proficient on Linux platforms with knowledge of various scripting languages, developing highly available and responsive web applications systems.
  • Must have Java development experience with demonstrated skills in Patterns, framework, and 3 or 4-tier service-layer platforms.
  • Must have experience leading and mentoring other developers and providing technical specs and/or documentation.
  • Must have a good understanding of front-end CSS, javascript, ajax and servlet programing.
  • Must have strong skills and expertise with back-end SOAP and RESTful service applications.
  • Must have working knowledge of SVN, json tools as well browser based debug tools.
  • Hands-on experience in DevOps best practices, processes and tools.
  • Experience with Maven and Jenkins (ideally in a multi-server build farm) and Nexus.
  • Experience automating application deployments using tools and techniques.
  • Experience supporting deployments, troubleshooting issues, etc. in a WebLogic (ideally 10.3.6) clustered environment.
  • Experience with JSR 168/286 Portlets, SOAP, Spring MVC,WSRP v1.0 & v2.0, Maven, RESTful Services/ JSR 311, JSON, & JQuery
  • Strong knowledge of one or more relevant database technologies such as SQL Server, Oracle, Amazon AWS, memory caching techniques and strategies.
  • 6+ years progressive experience designing and developing applications in a Java/JEE environment.
  • 2+ years as a Java Senior Developer or Architect.
  • Experience with object oriented design and design patterns.
  • Experience with CMS repositories, Spring, Hibernate, Java Application Server (WebLogic, Tomcat, JBoss, WebSphere, Glassfish, Eclipse IDE, (WebLogic Workshop), JavaScript, and XML/XSD.
  • Strong experience and skills at diagnosing exception stack-traces and examining application log files as well as oracle table data.
  • Experience working with business partners of varying levels to understand, expand, and gather system requirements.
  • Enthusiasm for learning and results oriented.
  • Outstanding verbal, interpersonal and written communication skills. Must have the ability to communicate effectively even when not interacting face-to-face.
Desired:
  • Experience with enterprise Java systems, implementing CMS solutions, and implementing solutions for an enterprise java portal are highly preferred;
  • Alfresco, Liferay, Freemarker, Spring Webflow & Groovy SQL/JDBC (Oracle Preferred);
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and decision making capabilities ;
  • Excellent problem solving skills with ability to analyze situations, identify existing or potential problems and recommend solutions ;
  • Superior interpersonal skills including courtesy, professionalism, and a cooperative attitude;
  • Proficiency in MS Office Applications (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel);
  • Ability to be flexible to handle multiple priorities and to work limited overtime;
  • Veteran status highly desired;
  • Previous experience with the Department of Veterans Affairs.
