Responsibilities

We are seeking Optical Communications engineers. These positions are in El Segundo, CA supporting a wide variety of Government customers and organizations. We provide systems engineering, analysis, modeling, simulation and hardware engineering support. These positions will be responsible for providing support in one or more of the areas of support.
When you join our Optical Communications Office, you become part of a dedicated groups of Optical Communications systems engineers and hardware specialists who play a key role in guiding and strengthening the future of our National Security Space Optical Communications capabilities. Our unique positions as consultant to our customers allows you to have an immediate and significant impact in driving national technical directions and decisions. The knowledge brought to bear on these challenges is backed by your optical communications systems engineering, modeling, simulation and/or hardware engineering efforts and validated in our growing optical communications laboratory. Selected candidates will act as senior technical authority, consultant, primary investigator, or team leader in areas related to laser communications (lasercom). Work independently with both internal and external customers and with technical support, as a technical authority, consultant, primary investigator, or project leader. May lead or organize interfaces between customers' and Aerospace technical and management staff. Coordinates medium to large-scale technical efforts across program/project lines. Mentor less experienced MTS and serve as role model.

Key Functions
  • Conducts specialized technical studies related to satellite lasercom and reports findings.
  • Initiates studies designed to solve new technical problems and provide new technical solutions related to lasercom.
  • Coordinates specific technical assignments for designated discipline or organizations. Provides technical advice to management, customers, and associate contractors.
  • Initiates development of advanced analytical techniques, concepts, and/or design criteria for subsystems.
  • Provides ongoing technical consultation and advice to management, customers, and contractors in satellite optical communications.
  • Takes initiative to inform management of perceived technical problems and recommends courses of action.
  • Supports multiple programs and/or activities and may lead cross-organizational teams and organizes interfaces with customer and/or Aerospace program offices.
  • Participates in lasercom system validation and verification activities which may include modeling & simulation and testing.
  • Lead the development of program interfaces between lasercom hardware and computer systems; diagnoses both hardware and software simulation tool problems; designs improvements to simulation environments; develops and/or revises programs for data reduction and analysis.
  • Acts as organization's designated representative at technical meetings, presentations, and symposia.

This position can be filled as an Aerospace Engineering Specialist or Senior Engineering Specialist

Qualifications for consideration as an Engineering Specialist

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Optical Sciences, or another related technical field from an accredited university
  • 8 or more years of experience in roles of increasing responsibility in engineering/scientific areas related to optical communications, satellites, and/or space systems engineering
  • Exhibits high level of innovation, creativeness, and initiative
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with customers
  • Broad internal recognition from peers and external customers for technical contributions related to satellite communications and/or optical communications
  • Experience developing specialized software tools for use in communications systems and/or optical systems analysis
  • Demonstrated ability to present results in formal and informal briefings to internal or external customers
  • Experience documenting results and contributing to deliverable technical reports
  • Demonstrated ability to develop designs or requirements for laser transmitters
  • Experience developing designs or requirements for optical detectors/receivers
  • Experience implementing and characterizing performance of a variety of optical modulation formats
  • Experience in satellite communications systems
  • Experience working with communication link and pointing error budgets
  • Demonstrated ability to devise and implement photonic testing programs to characterize system, subsystem, unit or component performance
  • Current Secret or Top Secret clearance with SSBI or periodic reinvestigation completed within the last 5 years that resulted in clearance granted or maintained

Preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to apply systems engineering to satellite communications or optical system activities and programs
  • Experience developing lasercom pointing, acquisition and tracking requirements
  • Experience with optical communication system requirements definition, validation and verification related to modulation and coding
  • Ability to complete trade studies related to optical communications receiver designs
  • Experience developing test methodology and implementing testing of lasercom related hardware
  • Experience developing specialized software tools in programming languages such as Matlab, Python, C++ or other used in lasercom related activities
  • Current TS/SCI access with counterintelligence polygraph

Qualifications for consideration as a Senior Engineering Specialist

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Optical Sciences, or another related technical field from an accredited university
  • 12 or more years of experience in roles of increasing responsibility in engineering/scientific areas related to optical communications, satellites, and/or space systems engineering
  • Exhibits an exceptionally high level of innovation, creativeness, and initiative
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with customers
  • Widely recognized internally and externally by peers, management, Government customers, and associate contractors for technical contributions to lasercom and/or satellite communications
  • Demonstrated ability to implement or oversee software development to aid in lasercom system architecture definition, requirements validation and verification, or performance modeling
  • Extensive experience presenting results, concepts and technical content internal customers, external customers and stakeholders possessing diverse technical backgrounds
  • Proven ability to produce influential documentation in the form of peer-reviewed publication, winning proposals, major acquisition documentation, industry standards, etc.
  • Extensive experience with laser transmitters and technologies
  • Extensive experience with optical detectors and technologies
  • Demonstrated ability to lead lasercom trade studies
  • Experience developing laser system end-to-end requirements and designs inclusive of transmitter, optical elements and receiver
  • Extensive experience in satellite communication systems
  • Experience developing and maintaining communications link and pointing error budgets
  • Proven ability to manage or support photonic or optical testing activities that characterize system, subsystem, unit and component performance
  • Current Secret or Top Secret clearance with SSBI or periodic reinvestigation completed within the last 5 years that resulted in clearance granted or maintained

Preferred
  • Master's or PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Optical Sciences, or another related technical field from an accredited university
  • Extensive experience in systems engineering applied to satellite communications or optical systems
  • Extensive experience developing laser or electro-optical pointing, acquisition and tracking requirements
  • Extensive experience with optical communication system requirements definition, validation and verification related to modulation and coding
  • Demonstrated ability to lead trade studies related to optical communications receiver designs
  • Experience with optical communications and space hardware testing including development of testbeds, ground support test equipment, test programs and management of test program execution for lasercom, component, units, subsystems or systems
  • Extensive experience developing or managing development of specialized software tools in programming languages such as Matlab, Python, C++ or other used in lasercom related activities
  • Current TS/SCI access with counterintelligence polygraph
