Job Description


Leading web services and e-Commerce company seeking a full-time Senior Systems Engineer to complement our growing team in Austin, TX. Texas.gov, an Austin-based subsidiary of eGovernment firm NIC Inc (NASDAQ:EGOV), helps the state of Texas web-enable thier information services to help make government interactions more accessible for everyone through the use of technology.


SUMMARY:  


The Senior Systems Engineer is responsible for all aspects of system administration in a fast-paced environment utilizing a variety of technologies. Examples of these technologies include Oracle Enterprise Linux / CentOS variants, Solaris, Puppet or other automation software, Windows Server 2008R2 / Windows Server 2012R2, SCCM, WSUS, VMWare, Vblock converged infrastructure



KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:  

* Identifies and recommends system solutions for customers using technologies that meet their needs

* Provides IT Support relating to technical issues involving core business applications and operating systems, as well as virtual environments. Also supports common applications from other vendors

* Provides support services for Microsoft/Linux related technologies including, but not limited to, Windows Server, Exchange, SQL, SharePoint, etc.

* Provides remote access solution recommendations and support utilizing tools such as VPN, Terminal Services, and Citrix

* System documentation and consulting services to include system reviews and recommendations

* Assumes functional leadership responsibility in the absence of management

* Maintains open communication with customers as required, keeping them informed of incident progress, and notify of impending changes, agreed outages, etc.

* Develops long term strategic road map for technology

* Works with managers and directors to develop high level strategic solutions to ensure continuity of operations are maintained and recurring problems are prevented or eliminated

* Identify and develops performance metrics

* Will partner with developers and end users to ensure system requirements understood and identified

* Reviews and understands existing enterprise requirements

* Identifies areas where documentation of the standards are needed and required

* Develops procedures for ensuring the security and integrity of the company systems

* Understand existing, identify areas of need and facilitate Systems Team policies

* Identifies potential vendor opportunities

* Identifies opportunity for new initiatives that have significant impact to the business and/or IT

* Responsible for success of entire life-cycle of project including both technology development and business solution

* Provides technical strategies crossing the organization Influences and educates senior managers on current and future technical directions

* Conceives new ideas and approaches changing the work environment or deliverables



EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION:  

* Bachelor's degree preferred, or equivalent, in area of specialty

* At least 8 years of experience in the field or in a related area

* Experience administering various Operating Systems, specifically in a virtual environment

* Ability to troubleshoot TCP/IP, LDAP, and other core technologies

* Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field

* Relies on Methods of Procedure (MOP) and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job

* Possess strong time management, prioritization and interpersonal skills

* Ability to read and modify basic scripts

* Experience with Puppet or similar automation/configuration management software

* Scripting experience with bash and/or PowerShell required

* Has knowledge of standard concept, practices and procedures within a particular field; can explain Systems technology in non-technical terms

* Develops Methods of Procedure (MOP's) for utilization by team

* Ability to leverage vendor tools to research, open and resolve defects or performance problems

* Peer reviews technical content in technical documentation, processes and changes

* Ensures capacity planning processes are followed by allocating system resources

* Automates common tasks

* Possesses advanced levels in software and information lifecycle process, data systems, relational databases and client server concepts

* Expert skills in utilizing vendor tools and vendor diagnostic tools to drive quick problem and performance resolutions

* Possesses project management skills and knowledge of the technology industry

* Ability to create automation script using multiple preferred scripting languages

* Recognized as having working knowledge in two or more technology families

* Versed in basic statistical methods and models (ex. demand growth, cost per unit) Ability to guide a team of Engineers through a project to completion

* Ability to identify, develop & document business requirements, technical requirements and functional designs

* Provides advanced level technical support for the applications and/or systems and/or operations staff

* Provide systems consulting to development teams

* Able to create capacity planning and trend analysis

* Able to optimize systems using tools, methods and processes to improve upon performance

* Able to provide and interpret relevant data (utilization, capacity metrics, cost, etc) in support of other teams and departments

* Able to identify and optimize costs

* Finds the nonobvious problem (e.g. malformed packets causing corruption, SharePoint development issues, random unexplained packet loss or system instability, root cause analysis of undocumented failed infrastructure) and drives cross functionally towards solution Balances the knowledge of software development with the knowledge of the business domain

* Understands capacity of existing systems and how that affects projects and requests

* Able to parse and decipher large data sets to build sophisticated presentations and IT business models. (ex. regional cost models, application demand on system resources, chargeback models, budget planning)

* Develop optimization techniques and models for complex what-if analysis of system demand, topology, or cost (e.g. impact of certain single-point-of-failure and cost)

* Strong knowledge of statistical or financial analysis methods (quantitative analysis skills) and/or multi-layer optimization methods (Operations Research skills)
