Job Description

The Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University was established in 1979 to conduct basic and applied research in robotics technologies relevant to industrial and societal tasks. Seeking to combine the practical and the theoretical, we have diversified efforts and approaches to robotics science while retaining the original goal of realizing the potential of the robotics field.

The Robotics Institute is searching for a Senior Web Developer. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who thrives in an interesting and challenging work environment.


Core responsibilities will include:

  • Planning, designing and maintaining infrastructure necessary to deliver digital content via a variety of applications.
  • Developing custom programs written in languages such as PHP, JavaScript, MySQL, Python, and others to enhance user appeal, utility and overall site functionality.
  • Creating Web front-end user interface to new or existing databases using a combination of HTML, CSS, SASS, JavaScript and other languages to make business applications accessible. Is comfortable with git source control, and prepared to do productive code review of other developers’ work.

Other duties will include:

  • Assisting/mentoring junior level web developers and may lead large department projects requiring in-depth knowledge of complex programming languages.
  • Responsible for maintaining technical documentation as needed and must be willing to work within a fast paced, continuous delivery development environment.
  • Attending project team and departmental meetings; may attend seminars or workshops
  • Recommending hardware and software purchases and the use of emerging technologies.
  • Maintaining scheduling and coordinating efforts including the priority of work to be accomplished (Trello).
  • Creating front-end user interfaces for new or existing databases using a combination of HTML, PHP, MySQL, and other languages to help the department track and parse all relevant information.
  • Providing technical leadership in planning, designing, and maintaining infrastructure necessary to deliver internet access and web hosting services.
  • Creating detailed documentation for web/labs/business forms/mailing lists/emergency recovery to be added to the RoboGuide as a means in which to give insight into how these things are setup both for the RI Web team, as well as to inform RI Members of what resources are available to them.

  • Bachelors degree
  • 5-8 years relevant experience


Required Skillsets:

  • Experience with full stack web development, including HTML, JavaScript, PHP, MySQL
  • Experience with server maintenance and development (Apache)
  • Web Content Management Experience
  • Web Development Experience
  • Experience with system integration
  • Experience creating development workflows and tooling
  • Experience with technologies currently in-use: JavaScript, PHP, Version control software (ex: GIT) and deployments (ex: Bitbucket)
  • Experience with Major CMSs/frameworks including WordPress, Laravel
  • Experience with WordPress themes such as Avada, and Boilerplate Sage
  • Experience with WordPress Multisites


Preferred Skillsets:

  • Experience with REST APIs to retrieve and edit information
  • Experience Maintaining intranets (RoboGuide)
  • Drupal, Cascade
